Governor Alia emphasizes the need for increased partnership to combat criminal elements in Benue State
Benue State Governor, Rev. Fr. Hyacinth Alia, has called for a stronger collaboration between the state government and the Nigerian Army to address the rising security concerns in the region. During a courtesy visit to the Chief of Army Staff, Lt. Gen. Taoheed Lagbaja, at the Army Headquarters in Abuja on Tuesday, Governor Alia highlighted the urgent need to rid the state of criminal elements.
In a statement released by the Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, Tersoo Kula, Governor Alia expressed his concerns about the deteriorating security situation in Benue State. He lamented the presence of armed herders, bandits, and local gangsters, who have disrupted the once peaceful state. He revealed that incidents of violence, including killings, have become alarmingly frequent, with many cases going unreported in the media.

Governor Alia stressed the importance of providing adequate manpower for the various security formations operating within the state, such as Operation Whirlstroke and the 401 Special Forces Brigade. He emphasized that equipping these formations and enabling them to enter the hinterlands would be crucial in effectively tackling the security menace. He called for the establishment of Force Operation Bases in strategic locations, including Anyiin, Naka, Ukum, Agatu, Udei, and Gbajimba.
Responding to the governor’s concerns, Lt. Gen. Taoheed Lagbaja assured Governor Alia that the Nigerian Army is fully aware of the security situation in Benue State. Having served in the state for nine years, the Chief of Army Staff expressed his deep understanding of the challenges faced by the people. He revealed that he receives daily security reports, both formal and informal, from Benue State.

Lt. Gen. Lagbaja pledged the commitment of the Nigerian Army to address the security concerns in Benue State, particularly as the dry season approaches. He acknowledged that this period often witnesses an upsurge in crisis situations, and the army is prepared to take necessary action. The Chief of Army Staff assured Governor Alia that the Nigerian Army will intensify its efforts to restore peace and security to the state.
With the collaboration between the Benue State government and the Nigerian Army, it is expected that a more coordinated approach will be adopted to tackle the security challenges in the state. The establishment of Force Operation Bases in key locations will strengthen security operations, ensuring that the menace of criminal elements is effectively addressed.
