In a recent revelation, Ugandan music icon Babe Cool has categorically denied any involvement in the arrest of Nigerian artists Tems and Omah Lay during their visit to Uganda in 2020. The incident, which sparked widespread controversy and accusations, has been a topic of heated debate for years. Now, Babe Cool has stepped forward to set the record straight, shedding light on what truly transpired during that tumultuous period.
The Arrest That Shook the Music Industry
The story dates back to December 12, 2020, when Tems and Omah Lay were scheduled to perform at a concert held at Speke Resort in Kampala, Uganda. At the time, the country was grappling with strict COVID-19 regulations, which limited public gatherings and events. Despite these restrictions, the concert proceeded, leading to the arrest of the two Nigerian artists.
Tems and Omah Lay were detained and later charged in court for violating social distancing protocols. They spent two days in prison before being granted bail. During the aftermath, Tems took to her X (formerly Twitter) handle to accuse Babe Cool of being behind their arrest, a claim that quickly gained traction online.

Babe Cool’s Side of the Story
In a recent episode of the Afrobeats Podcast, Babe Cool addressed these allegations head-on. “I didn’t get Tems and Omah Lay arrested in Uganda,” he stated firmly. He expressed frustration over how the internet had spun the narrative, painting him as the villain in the situation.
Babe Cool recounted the events of that night, revealing that he was asleep when he received a call from a friend informing him about the arrest. “I was sleeping around 3 a.m. when a friend called me to inform me that the Nigerian artists had been arrested. I got the details from him and started making calls to find out what was happening,” he explained.
By 6 a.m., Babe Cool was at the police station, where he spoke with the District Police Commander (DPC). He questioned the rationale behind arresting the artists, arguing that they were not responsible for controlling the number of attendees at the event. “I told him, ‘Why did you go to arrest the artists? The president has given an allowance of 200 people, but the artists don’t control the number of attendees. So why arrest them?’”
The Promoter’s Accusations
Babe Cool also addressed the role of the show promoter, who allegedly accused him of facilitating the arrests. According to him, the promoter saw him at the police station and began pointing fingers, claiming that Babe Cool was the reason for their predicament.
“The promoter was accusing me of facilitating the arrests because, two weeks before the event, Ugandan artists had been vocal on social media, demanding that the government allow them to perform. We had been shut down for over a year and a half, and even I, who is pro-government, couldn’t perform for even 100 people,” Babe Cool explained.
He emphasized that his tweets advocating for local artists had gone viral, leading to speculation that he was behind the arrests. However, Babe Cool maintained that his only intention was to support his fellow artists.
The Fight for Their Release
Babe Cool revealed that he played a pivotal role in securing the release of Tems and Omah Lay. Contrary to reports that Nigeria’s ambassador intervened, Babe Cool claimed that he was the one who worked tirelessly to ensure their freedom.
“I left the police station and went to the head office to meet with the big boss. As I was waiting, I saw on my phone that the Nigerian artists had been arraigned before the court. I made a call to the DPC and said, ‘I just left, I’m waiting for the big man to come so that we can discuss, and you went behind me and took the artists to court?’” he recounted.

Babe Cool’s efforts eventually paid off, and Tems and Omah Lay were released. However, he lamented that the promoter’s actions had complicated the situation, leading to unnecessary delays.
A Call for Understanding
Babe Cool’s account of the events offers a fresh perspective on a story that has been shrouded in controversy. He urged the public to be cautious about jumping to conclusions based on unverified information. “It’s very difficult when the internet picks on a story in a direction,” he said, emphasizing the need for fairness and accuracy in reporting.
As the dust settles on this chapter, Babe Cool’s revelations serve as a reminder of the complexities behind high-profile incidents and the importance of hearing all sides of the story.
