In a prelude to the highly anticipated Carabao Cup semi-final second leg match between Chelsea and Middlesbrough at Stamford Bridge on Tuesday night, former Arsenal star Paul Merson has come to the defense of Chelsea forward Cole Palmer. Merson has also issued a stern warning to Chelsea manager Mauricio Pochettino in light of the upcoming clash.

Reflecting on Palmer’s missed opportunities in the first-leg encounter, where Middlesbrough secured a 1-0 victory over Chelsea, Merson expressed his support for the young player. “Cole Palmer just had one of those days in the first game. He’s a top player and I don’t look at that performance and go, ‘He can’t do it at the top level’ – he got in the positions but he’s not a natural finisher,” Merson stated in an interview with Sky Sports.

Merson further cautioned Pochettino about the potential consequences of a defeat against Middlesbrough, emphasizing the need for Chelsea to approach the game with focus and strategic planning. “If they [Chelsea] did lose to Middlesbrough, where would it leave Mauricio Pochettino? Middlesbrough will try to get out and frustrate Chelsea. They have got to take it in segments, maybe 10 minutes or 20 minutes at a time,” Merson advised.

The former footballer highlighted the importance of Middlesbrough’s defensive strategy, predicting that the Championship club would aim to stifle Chelsea’s attacking prowess. “Middlesbrough just need to get through the first 20 minutes but if they don’t, I will be shocked. Chelsea don’t blow teams away so Middlesbrough will be in this game for a long time,” Merson added, underlining the potential for a challenging and closely contested match.
