The Head of Science Department at Linsy High School, Lagos, Mr. Sunday Chukwu, said the development of renewable energy had the potential of creating several employment opportunities for the citizens.
Chukwu said this at a science fair organised by the school recently, which saw the students displaying various projects.
Speaking on renewable energy, he said Nigeria should not lag behind in working on alternative energy source as was being done in other countries of the world.
He said, “Renewable energy is an energy that could be replenished on human time scale. It includes solar power, hydroelectric power, wind power, geothermal energy and biomass.
“These renewable energies do not pollute the environment, unlike the non-renewable energy like fossil fuel. The world’s energy generation today relies heavily on renewable energy, as most countries have already tapped into it, having noticed their comparatively low cost implications.
“In Nigeria, we are naturally blessed with abundant sunlight, and as such, our country should not be left out. These renewable energies are cheaper to harness than non-renewable energies, which make them more economically reliable and environmentally friendly.
“It is also an avenue to put a permanent solution to the persistent problem of power failure if we tap into it. And more importantly, it would boost the economy of the country, as companies and organisations would definitely go into production of solar panels. Consequently, it would provide employment opportunities for job seekers.”
In her remarks, principal of the school, Mrs. Tinuola Olufowobi, said the science exhibition was an opportunity to showcase the various scientific works carried out by the students.
