Despite reports that the former Deputy Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, Dr. Obadiah Mailafia, died at the National Hospital, the National Publicity Secretary of the Middle Belt Forum, Dr. Isuwa Dogo, has revealed that he died at the University of Abuja Teaching Hospital in Gwagwalada, Abuja.

Mailafia was the driving force behind the Middle Belt Forum.

Dr. Dogo also stated that the former CBN Governor’s death was shocking and fraught with suspicion.

According to a statement issued by Dr. Dogo on behalf of the Middle Belt Forum, his untimely death dealt a fatal blow to ethnic nationalities not only of the Middle Belt but of the country as a whole.

Dr.Dogo went on to say that, in response to various inquiries from Nigerians about the circumstances of his death, the Forum wanted to state that Dr. Mailafia arrived in Abuja from Akure last Sunday, September 12, 2021, and was met at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport by his wife.

He claimed that when he arrived home, his wife noticed he wasn’t in the best of health and appeared to be suffering from malaria.

Dr.Dogo went on to explain that after three days of treatment with no signs of improvement, he went to the CBN Hospital on Friday, September 17, 2021, where he was treated shabbily and required the intervention of a senior medic who immediately placed him on oxygen and admitted him.

Mailafia was later given the option of choosing between three hospitals, according to Dr.Dogo: Gwagwalada Hospital, National Hospital, and EHA Clinics.

He stated that the wife chose the third option, and that upon arrival at the EHA Clinics, she was subjected to yet another moment of anxiety because it took a direct order from the hospital’s top management to accept him.

He added that after a few hours of treatment, the EHA Clinics informed the wife that the former CBN Deputy Governor should be transferred to Gwagwalada because the clinic was not fully equipped to handle the case.

Dr.Dogo stated that the wife was opposed to the decision and insisted on taking her husband to Gwagwalada, and that Mailafia’s wife only agreed when the consultant assured her that nothing bad would happen to her husband.

Obadiah Mailafia’s Doctor was not on duty

He stated that Obadiah was transferred to Gwagwalada on Saturday, September 18, 2021, and that when he arrived, the doctor who was supposed to attend to him was not on duty.

He went on to say that even when foreign health consultants attempted to save the situation, the doctor on duty became enraged and declared that he was not obligated to listen to any foreign consultants who had been brought into the matter with the sole purpose of ensuring that nothing went wrong.

Dr.Dogo stated that the wife of the former CBN Deputy Governor was asked to pay N600,000 as a deposit, despite the fact that it was a referral case with an accruing medical bill to be settled by the CBN, and that at one point, Mailafia complained about his breathing problems and pleaded with the doctors to place him on a ventilator, which he flatly refused.

He claimed that even after doctors declared Mailafia dead, foreign consultants brought in through Dr. Mailafia’s son, who lives abroad, directed a family member who is a medical professional, along with the wife of the CBN Deputy Governor, to mount pressure on his chest for resuscitation and then placed him on life support.

He claimed that the doctors in Gwagwalada refused all entreaties from Mailafia’s family to follow the advice of the foreign consultants, insisting that they had already pronounced him dead, and that even when the wife could feel her husband’s pulse, the doctor flatly declared that there was nothing they could do because they had already pronounced him dead.

“While the preceding narrative summarizes the circumstances surrounding Dr. Mailafia’s death, we still await the outcome of the actual cause of his death. Dr. Mailafia, as a nationalist and patriot, was completely dedicated to the liberation of ethnic nationalities from oppression.

“The economist was never afraid to speak truth to power, just as he remained committed to the enthronement of justice and equity for all citizens across ethnic and religious divides,” said Dr. Dogo.
