Emily Deschanel’s Childhood Trauma Inflicted on Zooey Deschanel

In a recent interview, Zooey Deschanel revealed that her older sister, Emily Deschanel, used to terrify her with a plot from the sci-fi film Invasion of the Body Snatchers when they were children. The actress, who is now 41, recounted the experience during an interview with US Weekly, where she described how her four-year age gap with her sister made her an easy target for her sibling’s torment.

“When I was 3, she was 7, and she was already evil. She basically just used the plot of ‘Invasion of the Body Snatchers’ to terrify,” Zooey revealed. “I was terrified.”

Emily, who is four years older than her sister, admitted during an appearance on Conan O’Brien’s show that she loved to torment Zooey. “It was just the two of us, and I was the older sister, and we would fight all the time, but then, I would kind of play mental games with her,” she said. “My favorite one was I would tell her I was from Neptune, that I was a Neptunian, that I’d killed her sister and taken over her body, and that I was going to kill her next.”

Zooey’s transformation from a toddler to a teenager helped turn the tables on her sister. “She’s very possessive about her things,” Emily told Queen Latifah. “Growing up, I was never allowed to wear her clothes … she had signs on her door … ‘Do not enter this room, Emily,’ and she had a boombox that she had like a paragraph on ‘Under no circumstances is anyone allowed to touch this boombox ever. That means you, Emily Deschanel.'”

With both sisters now successful actors in their own right, it’s clear that their childhood experiences have not affected their relationship. “We have a great relationship,” Zooey said. “She’s amazing. She’s been a great support system for me my whole life.”

The Deschanel sisters are known for their successful careers in Hollywood. Emily is best known for her role as Dr. Temperance Brennan in the hit TV series Bones, while Zooey has starred in films such as 500 Days of Summer and Elf, as well as the TV show New Girl.
