In a bold statement, Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan declared that the Palestinian militant group Hamas should not be labeled as a terrorist organization. Instead, he referred to Hamas as a liberation group fighting to protect Palestinian lands and their people. Erdogan’s remarks have sparked both support and criticism from the international community.
Turkey, a member of NATO, has condemned the civilian deaths caused by Hamas’ recent rampage in southern Israel. However, Erdogan also urged Israeli forces to exercise restraint. As the violence and humanitarian crisis in Gaza escalate, Ankara has strongly criticized Israel’s bombardment of the territory.
During a speech to lawmakers from his ruling AK Party, Erdogan used an Arabic word that denotes those who fight for their faith to describe Hamas. He stated, “Hamas is not a terrorist organization; it is a liberation group, Mujahideen, waging a battle to protect its lands and people.”

Unlike many of its NATO allies and the European Union, Turkey does not consider Hamas a terrorist organization. In fact, Turkey hosts members of the group on its territory. Ankara supports a two-state solution to the long-standing Israeli-Palestinian conflict.
Erdogan did not shy away from criticizing Western powers for their support of Israel’s bombing campaign in Gaza. He called for an immediate ceasefire, the unhindered entry of humanitarian aid into Gaza, and for Muslim countries to unite in order to stop the violence. Erdogan stated, “The perpetrators of the massacre and the destruction taking place in Gaza are those providing unlimited support for Israel. Israel’s attacks on Gaza, for both itself and those supporting them, amount to murder and mental illness.”
Italy’s Deputy Prime Minister Matteo Salvini swiftly rebuked Erdogan’s comments, describing them as “grave and disgusting” and stating that they did not contribute to de-escalation. Salvini urged Italy’s foreign minister to lodge a formal protest with Ankara.
The international community remains divided in its response to Erdogan’s statements. Some countries, particularly those sympathetic to the Palestinian cause, have expressed support for Turkey’s stance. However, others, including Israel’s allies, have criticized Erdogan for his remarks, viewing them as unhelpful and inflammatory.
