The Major VMAs Beauty Trend Was Eye Makeup That Matched Your Dress

The MTV VMAs often make for an eclectic, fun (and sure, sometimes weird) red carpet. The 2017 edition was fairly tame compared with what we’ve seen in years past, but that meant there was more time to appreciate the details — like, for example, the super-pretty makeup looks.

The major beauty trend of the evening was simple: Find a dress in an unexpected hue, like lavender or mustard-y gold, and then match your eye makeup to it.

The first to get in on this was Lorde, who showed up looking great in a voluminous, feather-covered Monique Lhuillier gown — her stylist Karla Welch really knows her stuff — with a pleasantly laid-back half-up ponytail styled by Cameron Rains that was casual and rumpled enough to perfectly offset the fancy dress. While most of her makeup (by Amber Dreadon) was of the no-makeup persuasion, Lorde’s brows were as prominent as ever, topping off a hazy wash of pinkish-lavender eye shadow that mimicked the shade of her dress.

Yara Shahidi went in a similar direction, matching her gold-and-black Zimmermann gown to her gold-and-black smoky eye, courtesy of makeup artist Emily Cheng. It’s worth noting that the actress wore a stellar ponytail — slick in the front, with a deep side part, and brushed-out, voluminous curls in back — by hairstylist Nai’vasha Johnson.

Vanessa Hudgens also went matchy-matchy, pairing her red Yanina Couture dress with a red, rhinestone-encrusted cat eye. Makeup artist Allan Avendaño, who was behind the look, revealed on Instagram that he used Christian Louboutin Luminous Ink Liner in Rouge Louboutin Vibrant Red topped with red Swarovski crystals.
