Stars Proved That Black is Always the New Black This Week

It may still be summer for a few more weeks (sorry for the reminder of how little time is left!), but that doesn’t mean that colorful dressing is the only option as August begins to wind down. This week, a range of stars — from established names like Salma Hayek to next-generation cool kids like Jaden Smith — found ways to weave a good bit of black into their end-of-summer looks. 

The hue served as the backdrop for a colorful floral print in Salma Hayek’s gauzy dress, a high-contrast accent for an otherwise sunshiney look in Sasha Lane‘s yellow Gucci suit and a method of dressing up Tavi Gevinson‘s jeans, proving that black can play nice with other colors. Other stars, like Lorde wearing Elie Saab to perform at Outside Lands or Krysten Ritter in J. Mendel, chose to go with the tried-and-true formula of head-to-toe black. Consider this further evidence that no matter how many times a magazine prints the words “(insert color here) is the new black,” black is never really going to be replaceable.
