In a chilling attack that has left the people of Gbagir community in Ukum Local Government Area of Benue State shaken, suspected killer herdsmen launched an assault on Good Friday morning, targeting worshippers heading to church. Early reports indicate that at least ten people were killed, with many others wounded in the brutal ambush. The incident has once again reignited fears and frustrations among residents, who say their pleas for protection go unanswered by the government.

Morning Assault Leaves Community Bloodied

The attack unfolded in the early hours of Friday around 6:00 a.m., as innocent residents were making their way to church services in Gbagir. Eyewitnesses and local sources described a terrifying scene where heavily armed men, allegedly carrying AK-47 rifles, stormed into the community with deadly intent.

“The herdsmen first invaded the neighbouring community of Chito on Thursday and killed two people. When they came here early this morning, they ruthlessly attacked us, killing ten people — including women and children,” said one distraught community member. He further revealed that at least 25 other victims are nursing serious injuries, with their survival hanging in the balance.

Following the attack, community members began transporting the bodies to the palace of their traditional ruler. The grim task underscored the deep sorrow and panic sweeping through the town as survivors struggled to come to terms with yet another brutal attack.

Community Feels Abandoned Amid Rising Violence

Anguish and anger are the dominant emotions felt by the people of Gbagir. The source lamented bitterly that throughout the repeated waves of violence, the government has offered no tangible security or assistance. “We feel abandoned. Not once during these attacks have government security personnel come to our aid,” he said, echoing a sentiment shared by many in the community.

This persistent neglect has compounded the fears of the local population, who live in constant dread of future attacks. The recurring violence perpetrated by herdsmen in this region has become a devastating cycle, severely disrupting daily life and deepening mistrust between the residents and the authorities meant to protect them.

Efforts to formally corroborate the attack with the Benue State Police Command met with silence. Attempts to reach the police spokesperson, CSP Cathe, for comment were unsuccessful. This lack of official response only adds to the perception of government inaction in the face of escalating violence.

Broader Context of Herdsmen Violence in Benue State

Benue State has become a frequent battleground for violent clashes between herdsmen and farming communities in recent years. The conflict, largely over land and resources, has claimed hundreds of lives and displaced thousands, creating a humanitarian crisis that continues unabated.

This latest attack on worshippers during one of the most solemn days in the Christian calendar has sparked national outrage and renewed calls for urgent government intervention. Community leaders and civil society organizations have repeatedly urged authorities to enhance security measures, investigate the attacks, and bring perpetrators to justice.

Yet, the feeling among residents remains that their cries fall on deaf ears, intensifying their sense of vulnerability and isolation.

As the community in Gbagir mourns its dead and tends to the wounded, the need for effective action to break the cycle of violence is more pressing than ever. Without genuine support from government and security agencies, the people of Benue face a grim future under the shadow of ongoing attacks.
