President Buhari Condemns Recent Violence in Benue State, Urges Swift Action to End Attacks

President Buhari has expressed deep concern over the recent spate of violent attacks in Benue State. The President has condemned the attacks which led to the deaths of dozens of people in Umogidi community of Entekpa-Adoka in Otukpo Local Government Area of the state. In a statement issued on Saturday by Garba Shehu, the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Publicity, President Buhari has urged all concerned authorities to make concerted efforts to end the “extreme violence”.

Terrorism has become a dangerous tool used in inter-communal conflicts in Nigeria, and President Buhari has urged that the attackers be found and dealt with swiftly according to the law. The President conveyed his condolences to the families of those who lost their lives as a result of the recent attack and directed the secret services, police, and military commanders to increase surveillance on all fronts and review security management in affected areas immediately.

“The entire nation stands united in the fight against the forces of terror and evil. Our thoughts and prayers are with the families of those murdered,” the President said.

The attack in Umogidi community, which occurred on Friday, March 31, 2023, saw armed assailants raiding the village and shooting indiscriminately. Reports indicate that over 50 people lost their lives, while several others were injured. The attack is believed to have been carried out by herdsmen, who have been blamed for several violent incidents in the region.

The Benue State Governor, Samuel Ortom, has also condemned the attack and has urged the security agencies to apprehend the perpetrators and bring them to justice. The Governor has called on the federal government to provide more support to the state government in its efforts to tackle the security challenges in the state.

The recent attack in Benue State is just one of several incidents of violence that have been reported in different parts of Nigeria in recent times.
