In a bid to combat the spread of cervical cancer, the Osun State Government has launched a mass vaccination campaign and is urging residents to embrace the vaccine. The government believes that this initiative will help cushion the effect and spread of the disease within the state.
Dr Akindele Adekunle, the Special Adviser to the Osun State Governor on Public Health, emphasized the importance of curbing the menace of cervical cancer during a sensitization program held in Osogbo on Wednesday. He stated that the welfare of the people is a top priority for the Ademola Adeleke administration, which is why they have called on critical stakeholders to educate and inform the public about the dangers of cervical cancer and the government’s efforts to combat it.

“We are here today to allay your fears concerning receiving the vaccine provided by the government and our development partners to cushion the effect and spread of this disease in our State,” Dr Adekunle said. “We cannot do this alone. We need your support. The HPV vaccine, when given, helps protect against cervical cancer.”
The mass vaccination campaign is set to commence on October 24, 2023, and Osun State is among the 16 states in the federation that will be participating in this initiative. This is a testament to Governor Ademola Adeleke’s commitment to improving the healthcare delivery system in the state.
Dr Isiaka Ayodeji, the Southwest Regional Coordinator of the World Health Organization (WHO), commended Governor Adeleke for his dedication to healthcare. He stated, “This is a testament to how Governor Ademola Adeleke is committed to the improvement of the healthcare delivery system in the State.”

Cervical cancer is a significant public health concern globally, and Nigeria is not exempt from its impact.
