Godwin Udoh, Asaba

Delta State Governor Ifeanyi Okowa has promised to complete the Asaba Stadium within  12 months ahead of  the 2018 Africa Athletics Championships in Asaba.

Okowa  made the pledge during a  town hall meeting in Oshimili South Local Government Area of the state on Tuesday.

He  said the completion of the  project was key to his administration and also to promote sporting activities in the state.

“The stadium at Asaba is a huge challenge, it will cost the state over N2bn,”  the governor said.

“We will welcome private investors towards the completion of the sports centre.

“The stadium has six lanes instead of eight. It means no standard athletics event can  take place in it so we have to effect corrections and some other major work before we can actually call it a stadium.”

He added, “We are working very hard to negotiate the current contractor out and we are confident that the investors who are coming in are ready to take up the stadium as quickly as possible to completion.”
