Liz Cheney Raises Concerns About Jim Jordan’s Potential Speakership and Its Implications for the Constitution

0

In a powerful speech at the University of Minnesota, former Representative Liz Cheney (R-Wyo.) expressed her concerns about Representative Jim Jordan (R-Ohio) potentially becoming the next Speaker of the House. Cheney, who previously served as the vice chair of the House Select Committee investigating the January 6, 2021, insurrection, accused Jordan of being a key player in former President Donald Trump’s attempts to overturn the 2020 election results.

Cheney boldly stated, “Jim Jordan knew more about what Donald Trump had planned for January 6th than any other member of the House of Representatives. He was part of the conspiracy in which Donald Trump engaged as he attempted to overturn the election.” Her remarks shed light on Jordan’s alleged involvement in Trump’s efforts to cling onto power despite the election outcome.

While Cheney expressed doubt about Jordan’s chances of winning the upcoming contest for the speakership, she emphasized the significance of his potential ascension to the position. According to Cheney, if Jordan were to become Speaker, it would send a troubling message about the Republican Party’s allegiance to the Constitution. She argued that it would become increasingly difficult to argue that elected Republicans could be trusted to defend the principles enshrined in the Constitution.

Notably, Jordan has received the endorsement of former President Trump, who continues to exert significant influence over a large portion of the Republican caucus. Trump expressed his support for Jordan on his Truth Social platform, proclaiming, “He will be a GREAT Speaker of the House.” This endorsement further solidifies Jordan’s position as a leading contender for the speakership.

Currently, Representative Steve Scalise (R-La.) is the only other member who has officially entered the race, but additional candidates are expected to announce their candidacies in the coming days. The race for Speaker of the House is shaping up to be a highly contested battle within the Republican Party.

Cheney also commented on the recent ouster of Representative Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) as Speaker. She commended the Democrats for their “principled” decision not to save McCarthy’s job, citing his unwavering support for Trump and failure to hold him accountable. All 208 Democrats, along with eight Republicans, voted for McCarthy’s removal, showcasing a unified front against those who perpetuate Trump’s false claims about the election.

Reflecting on McCarthy’s removal, Cheney stated, “I think they did exactly the right thing, and it was a courageous show of leadership.” Her remarks highlight the growing divide within the Republican Party, with some members choosing to prioritize loyalty to Trump over their commitment to upholding the Constitution.

As the race for Speaker of the House unfolds, the outcome will have far-reaching implications for the future of the Republican Party and its dedication to defending the Constitution. Liz Cheney’s warning about Jim Jordan’s potential speakership serves as a stark reminder of the challenges facing the GOP as it grapples with its identity and allegiance in the post-Trump era.

By addressing the concerns raised by Cheney and other notable figures, the Republican Party has an opportunity to redefine itself and reaffirm its commitment to the principles that underpin the Constitution. The choice of the next Speaker will undoubtedly shape the party’s trajectory and its ability to regain public trust.
