Guber polls: Ondo APC female aspirant cautions party over zoning arrangement

As the race for the governorship primaries of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Ondo State heats up, one female aspirant, Funmi Waheed-Adekojo, is cautioning the party against placing too much emphasis on unwritten zoning arrangements.

In a recent press conference in Akure, the state capital, Waheed-Adekojo expressed her concerns about the potential negative impact of strict adherence to zoning on the party’s chances in the upcoming elections.

With 16 governorship aspirants in the running, Waheed-Adekojo stands out as the only candidate from the northern senatorial district, while the remaining 15 come from the southern senatorial district. She believes that prioritizing competency over zoning is crucial in selecting the best candidate to lead the state.

The aspirant highlighted the drawbacks of past zoning practices, arguing that they have often prevented the emergence of competent leaders capable of steering the state towards progress and development.

Waheed-Adekojo urged party members to carefully evaluate all aspirants based on their qualifications and track record, rather than their geographical origin. She emphasized that all senatorial districts in the state have had their turn in the zoning rotation, making it unnecessary to continue placing such a strong emphasis on this practice.

Calling for a shift away from selfish tendencies among politicians, Waheed-Adekojo stressed the importance of creating a conducive environment for future generations. She criticized the lack of concern among some politicians for the welfare of their constituents and their failure to prioritize the long-term interests of the state.

In light of these considerations, Waheed-Adekojo urged the APC leadership in Ondo State to focus on selecting a candidate who possesses the necessary skills and vision to lead the state effectively, regardless of their senatorial district.

The upcoming governorship primaries in Ondo State are expected to be closely watched, as the APC seeks to position itself as the party of choice for voters in the state. With a diverse field of aspirants vying for the party’s ticket, the decision on who will represent the APC in the gubernatorial election will be crucial in determining the party’s prospects in the polls.

As the campaign season unfolds, all eyes will be on how the APC navigates the delicate balance between zoning considerations and the need for competent leadership. The outcome of the primaries will not only shape the party’s chances in the upcoming election but also set the tone for the governance of Ondo State in the years to come.
