According to a death certificate obtained by The Blast, Weathers succumbed to “atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease” at his residence in Venice, California. The actor is survived by his sons Matthew and Jason Weathers, born during his marriage to ex-wife Mary Ann Castle from 1973 to 1983.

Reflecting on his decision to pursue acting, Weathers once shared in an interview with Sports Illustrated in 2023, “I knew that it’s time for me to walk away from this. It’s not what I really want to do. I’m going to go to Los Angeles and give myself a shot. I was blessed enough to have made it.”

The versatile actor’s accolades extended beyond the football field, with a Primetime Emmy nomination in 2021 for his portrayal of Greef Karga in the acclaimed “Star Wars” series, “The Mandalorian.” Weathers’ filmography boasted a diverse range of characters, including Colonel Al Dillon in “Predator,” Jericho Jackson in “Action Jackson,” and Mark Jefferies in “Chicago P.D.”
