In a scathing criticism of President Bola Tinubu’s administration, Kenneth Okonkwo, a prominent member of the Labour Party (LP), has expressed his disapproval of the nomination of 47 individuals for ministerial appointments. Okonkwo, a veteran actor in Nigeria’s thriving film industry, Nollywood, took to Twitter to express his concerns about what he deems as the creation of an excessively bloated bureaucracy.

Okonkwo highlighted the irony of such a move at a time when the nation is grappling with the possibility of becoming the poorest country in the world. He questioned the rationale behind the decision, reminding the administration that the constitution only permits the appointment of 37 ministers.

“What a regime we have? We are hurtling towards becoming the poorest country in the world, and instead of addressing pressing issues, this regime is considering setting up the most bloated bureaucracy imaginable,” Okonkwo stated in his tweet.

Emphasizing the potential consequences of such a bureaucratic expansion, Okonkwo argued that it would lead to an exorbitant cost of governance, which would be borne by the Nigerian people. He expressed concern that the additional financial burden would result in increased taxes, inflated prices of essential commodities, and reliance on external borrowing. Drawing attention to the lack of productivity under previous APC regimes, Okonkwo expressed sympathy for Nigerians who he believes will suffer due to the actions of what he perceives as an inept government.

Okonkwo’s criticism raises important questions about the government’s priorities and fiscal responsibility. As the nation faces economic challenges, it becomes crucial to examine the implications of expanding the government workforce. By doing so, the administration risks burdening an already struggling population with higher taxes and increased living expenses.

Furthermore, Okonkwo’s remarks shed light on the issue of productivity within APC regimes. While effective governance should focus on fostering economic growth and local industries, Okonkwo contends that the government has failed to produce anything of significance, leaving Nigerians to bear the brunt of its shortcomings.

In light of these concerns, it remains to be seen how President Tinubu’s administration will respond to this criticism. The nomination of 47 ministerial candidates, exceeding the constitutional limit, raises questions about the government’s commitment to uphold the rule of law and adhere to established procedures. As Nigerians eagerly await the unveiling of the new cabinet, they will undoubtedly be watching closely to see if their concerns are addressed.

While Okonkwo’s remarks have provoked substantial attention, it is crucial to recognize the broader implications of this issue. The composition and size of the cabinet not only reflect the government’s priorities but also have direct implications for the nation’s economy and the well-being of its citizens.

As the debate surrounding these nominations intensifies, it is important to strike a balance between ensuring effective governance and minimizing the financial burden on the Nigerian people. The Tinubu administration must carefully consider the concerns raised by Okonkwo and others who are worried about the long-term impact of an expanded bureaucracy.

By addressing these concerns, the government can demonstrate its commitment to responsible governance and alleviate the fears of those who worry about the nation’s future. Only time will tell whether these concerns will be addressed and whether President Tinubu’s administration will navigate these challenges successfully.
