Keysight Technologies Launches N5186A MXG Vector-Signal Generator for 5G, LTE, and Wi-Fi Testing

Signal Generator Revolutionizes Testing of 5G, LTE, and Wi-Fi Components and Systems

In a breakthrough development, Keysight Technologies has unveiled the N5186A MXG vector-signal generator, a cutting-edge device designed to generate wireless signals for testing a wide range of components and systems. With its advanced features and capabilities, this signal generator is set to revolutionize the way commercial and military wireless receivers, amplifiers, and systems are designed and tested.

The N5186A MXG vector-signal generator is available in both one-channel and four-channel models, providing flexibility and versatility for different testing requirements. Equipped with Type-N connectors, each channel can generate RF signals ranging from 9 kHz to an impressive 3 GHz, 6 GHz, or 8.5 GHz, depending on the model. The 8.5 GHz option covers all Wi-Fi bands and 5G FR1 frequencies, while the 6 GHz version is ideal for testing the 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz Wi-Fi bands and 5G FR1, including the popular unlicensed bands between 3 GHz and 4 GHz.

One of the key features of the N5186A MXG is its utilization of proprietary direct digital synthesis (DDS) digital-to-analog converter (DAC) technology. This innovative technology enables the generator to produce RF signals with an impressive bandwidth of up to 960 MHz. Additionally, the MXG offers an optional arbitrary waveform generator, allowing users to generate custom RF signals tailored to their specific testing requirements.

The N5186A supports both analog (AM, FM, PM) and vector I/Q modulation, providing users with a wide range of modulation options. The settable output power of the generator ranges from +20 dBm to -144 dBm (standard), with the option to upgrade to +30 dBm. The output power varies depending on the frequency, with a standard output power of +20 dBm from 10 MHz to 6 GHz. Above 6 GHz, the output power is +18 dBm, and from 9 kHz to 10 MHz, it is +13 dBm. For additional modulation capabilities, users can leverage Keysight’s PathWave signal-generation software.

One of the challenges in working with gigahertz frequencies is the signal losses and distortion caused by test fixtures. To address this, the MXG incorporates a built-in reflectometer, eliminating the need for a separate instrument. This built-in feature allows users to characterize test fixtures, cables, and connectors, compensating for losses and ensuring accurate and reliable testing results.

The N5186A MXG is designed in a compact 2U-height box, offering significant space savings compared to previous signal-generator models housed in 3U cases. This compact design not only saves valuable rack space but also reduces the height of test setups, especially when multiple instruments such as network analyzers and power supplies are stacked together.

Connectivity options for the N5186A MXG include USB, LAN, and GPIB ports, providing seamless integration with other instruments and systems. The LAN connectivity also enables users to take advantage of the instrument’s web and FTP servers, enhancing ease of use and remote operation.

With its impressive capabilities, compact design, and advanced features, the N5186A MXG vector-signal generator from Keysight Technologies is set to revolutionize the testing of 5G, LTE, and Wi-Fi components and systems. Its ability to generate a wide range of RF signals, coupled with its built-in reflectometer and modulation options, makes it an indispensable tool for engineers and researchers in the wireless communication industry.
