Kelly Clarkson’s Decision to Delay Divorce from Brandon Blackstock

Kelly Clarkson, the American Idol winner, and pop superstar, recently revealed the reasons behind her decision to delay her divorce from her ex-husband, Brandon Blackstock. The 39-year-old singer opened up about her struggle to end her marriage during an interview on the “We Can Do Hard Things” podcast in June.

Clarkson admitted that she wanted to prove to herself that she could withstand the challenges thrown her way. Despite knowing that her marriage was beyond repair, she found it difficult to admit defeat and walk away. “I’m like, ‘I can do this. I can handle so much,'” she said. “My ego is like, ‘I can control my actions, I can control my reactions, I can do this, and I can reach this person, and I can get through.'”

The singer’s main motivation for staying in the marriage was her two children, River Rose and Remington. Clarkson’s own experience of her parents’ divorce when she was just six years old had a profound impact on her, even inspiring her hit song “Because of You,” which she wrote when she was 16. “Divorce isn’t fun,” she told the Mirror in 2012. “It affects relationships you get into when you are older.” Clarkson’s childhood experience was made more traumatic because her father left the picture, something she admitted to the podcast hosts.

Blackstock’s own experiences as the son of divorced parents also contributed to their decision to stay together. “If I’m being completely honest, we don’t want to do what we saw done,” she said. Ultimately, Clarkson came to understand that staying in a marriage that was serving neither of the parents was doing the kids no good. “After, I’m a far better mother. Because I think when you’re honest with yourself, you’re able to be honest with others,” she said.
