Gayle King may be known for her calm personality and warm presence on television, but every now and then, she reveals small details about her past that hint at deeper heartbreak behind the scenes. One recent comment about her ex-husband caught people’s attention for exactly that reason.
While appearing on CBS Mornings, King casually opened up about a painful compromise she made during her marriage, and honestly, it sounded like something that still bothers her years later.
The conversation started innocently enough during an interview connected to Oprah Winfrey’s dog-themed miniseries “Life is Better with Dogs.” But while speaking with entrepreneur Jonathan Regev, King suddenly reflected on her former marriage and admitted that her ex-husband disliked dogs so much that she felt pressured to give hers away.
And yes, she still sounds upset about it.

King joked that losing her dog should have been an early warning sign about the relationship itself. But underneath the humor, there seemed to be genuine lingering frustration. At one point, she even admitted outright, “I’m still a little bitter.”
Honestly, many pet owners probably understood exactly what she meant.
For some people, pets are family. Being asked to part with them can feel deeply personal, almost like giving up a piece of comfort or identity just to keep a relationship working.
A Small Story That Revealed Bigger Relationship Problems
Sometimes the smallest memories reveal the biggest truths about a relationship.
Gayle King didn’t launch into a dramatic story or openly attack her ex-husband during the interview. In fact, she mostly laughed while telling it. But there was still something sad underneath the joke.

Gayle King’s Marriage Ended After A Public Betrayal
Gayle King and William Bumpus were married from 1982 until 1993. Together, they had two children: William Bumpus Jr. and Kirby Bumpus.
Despite the eventual collapse of their marriage, King has often spoken proudly about their children, both of whom remain very close to her today.
Still, the marriage itself ended painfully.
Over the years, King has occasionally hinted at the betrayal she experienced during the relationship. In fact, one of her most talked-about interviews happened when she bluntly revealed she still struggled to forget the woman she caught her husband with during their marriage.
That level of honesty surprised many people at the time because King usually keeps parts of her private life fairly controlled in public.
