Court jails 35 persons for environmental offences

Peter Dada, Akure

No fewer than 35 persons were arrested and arraigned in court during the Saturday environmental sanitation in Akure, Ondo State, for violating environmental sanitation laws.

The accused were sentenced to various jail terms ranging from one month to two months.

They were, however, given option of fines from N2,000 to N5,000.

The General Manager, Ondo State Waste Management Authority, Mr. Ayo Mesileya, stated this in Akure after the exercise.

Expressing his displeasure over the disobedience to the stay-at- home order of the state government by the convicts, the GM said no person arrested during the sanitation period went away without a punishment.

“During the exercise, only pupils sitting for placement exams were allowed to move, as there was restriction on both human and vehicular movement.

“Generally, the exercise was successful. We are happy with the level of compliance,” Mesileya said.

He advised the residents to make sanitation their daily affairs rather than “monthly ritual.”
