A Stricter Approach to Construction Safety

In an effort to enhance building safety and uphold construction standards, the Abia State Government has enacted a crucial new regulation: all three-story buildings must now be equipped with elevators. This new directive aims to ensure that constructions throughout the state not only meet safety standards but also provide users with a habitable living environment.

During a recent training session for the building control unit of the Greater Aba Development Authority (GADA), Architect Uche Ukeje, the agency’s general manager, shared insights into the public safety measures that will now guide building projects. The regulation signifies a shift towards more stringent laws aimed at reducing risks associated with building collapses while safeguarding lives and properties within the community.

Elevators – A New Essential for Modern Living

The requirement for elevators in three-story buildings is a progressive step aimed at addressing both accessibility and safety issues associated with multi-story living spaces. Ukeje, through his representative, Mr. Enyinnaya Romanus, head of the building control unit, stressed the importance of adhering to these new guidelines. “We want to ensure that every stage of construction is monitored and that developers comply with regulations that keep our buildings safe and our environment protected,” he stated.

Previously, the absence of effective building control measures had led to widespread negligence in construction practices. Developers were often given leeway, leading to unsafe structures. Under the new guidelines, every construction project must undergo strict monitoring starting from the foundational phase, requiring developers to secure necessary approvals before any work begins. “Building control is no longer a suggestion; it is a necessity,” Romanus emphasized.

The message to developers is clear: without an elevator in a three-story building, there will be no approval for further construction. Any structure that fails to comply with these regulations will face significant hurdles in the approval process, stalling projects until standards are adequately met.

Commitment to a Safe Environment

The GADA is taking a holistic approach to building safety, which includes meticulous oversight of plans concerning drainage and waste disposal. Romanus highlighted that the era of improperly managed waste disposal by developers is over. “If we find that a developer is cutting corners, they will face legal repercussions unless they promptly rectify their actions,” he warned. This strict adherence to regulations aims to protect not just the buildings but also the surrounding environment, enhancing the overall aesthetics and health of the community.

Additionally, GADA has made strides in modernizing operations, integrating digital solutions to improve transparency. Developers can now check the status of their projects remotely, making the process more efficient and accountable. Romanus mentioned that if construction must be halted, it will be easy for developers to understand the reasoning through GADA’s online platforms.

The agency is also taking a firm stance against environmental degradation, working closely with local health officials to crack down on those harming the ecosystem.
