Bishop Oyedepo ‘Nigeria’s education system needs overhauling’, Cleric says

Oyedepo said that only a standard and formidable education system can help to hasten Nigeria’s much desired socio-economic recovery and growth.

The Chancellor, Landmark University, Omu-Aran, Kwara State, Bishop David Oyedepo, has advocated review of the nation’s education system for Nigeria to achieve the desired transformation education sector.

The chancellor made the call on Friday, November 10, 2017, in Omu-Aran while speaking at the Graduation, Prize Given Day and Public Lecture to commemorate the 50 years anniversary of Government Secondary School, Omu-Aran.

Oyedepo, also an old boy of the school, stressed the importance of quality education in the life of any society and its people.

The cleric said that only a standard and formidable education system can help to hasten Nigeria’s much desired socio-economic recovery, growth and development.

He expressed the need for the leaders to facilitate formidable platform, through the education sector, to enable youths acquire improved education to prepare them toward taking up leadership role in the future in the country.

He said, “Wherever goes quality education there goes civilisation and socio-economic development.

“Egypt was once leading in education and at the same time leading in civilisation. The people from Europe were going to Egypt to learn Architecture, Geometry and Archaeology.

“There is no substitute to quality education in the recovery process of any nation like ours.”

Mr Lateef Fagbemi, (SAN) in a lecture, advocated increased and sustainable funding of the nation’s education institutions and the education system.

Fagbemi spoke on “Functional Education: An Imperative for Rapid Socio-Economic Development in Nigeria.”

“Even if we are not capable of maintaining the recommended United Nation’s benchmark of 26 per cent, we certainly must improve on our present financial arrangement,”  he said

Prof. Adeniyi Olayanju, the Vice-Chancellor, Landmark University, in a remark, praised members of the school old boys association for their contributions for the infrastructure development of the school.

The high point of the occasion was the awarding of certificates and prizes to students of  the school that excelled in their various studies.
