In a significant boost to the nation’s economy, the Kano Area Command of the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) announced that it generated a whopping N9.7 billion in revenue in February. This impressive figure was derived from Duty Paid Value (DPV) on imports and excise, showcasing the command’s commitment to enhancing trade facilitation and revenue generation.
Dauda Chana, the Customs Area Comptroller overseeing Kano and Jigawa States, shared this exciting news during an interview with journalists in Kano. He highlighted the command’s proactive measures to combat revenue leakages through border posts by intensifying security and surveillance efforts to thwart the smuggling of contraband items.
Chana emphasized the command’s dedication to maintaining a strict 100 percent physical examination of goods entering through its borders to prevent the infiltration of contraband goods, including arms and ammunition. He disclosed that an effective operational order had been issued to field officers at border posts to tackle the scourge of smuggling head-on.

“We will continue to prioritize trade facilitation, revenue generation, and border security in accordance with the directives of the NCS management. Our collaboration with traditional rulers in border communities is instrumental in providing reliable information on smugglers’ movements,” Chana stated.
In a bid to enhance enforcement efforts, personnel of the command have been strategically stationed at key locations to intercept smugglers attempting to evade capture at entry points. Various strategies have also been deployed to gather crucial intelligence that can lead to the apprehension and prosecution of individuals involved in smuggling activities.
Chana underscored the importance of engaging border communities to encourage the sharing of intelligence reports that could aid the command in apprehending smugglers. He expressed confidence that the active involvement of local residents would significantly bolster the service’s efforts to safeguard the nation’s economy from the nefarious activities of saboteurs.
