The iconic teen flick “Mean Girls” continues to be a favorite of fans and celebrities nearly two decades after its initial release in 2004. Directed by Mark Waters and written by Tina Fey based on the book “Queen Bees and Wannabes” by Rosalind Wiseman, the movie is responsible for creating some of the most memorable lines in movie history, including “On Wednesdays, we wear pink” and “Is butter a carb?” It also helped launch the careers of its stars, including Rachel McAdams and Amanda Seyfried.

Despite its age, “Mean Girls” has remained a cultural phenomenon, with fans celebrating the movie each year on October 3, which is now recognized as “Mean Girls Day.” The popularity of the film has also spawned a TV sequel, “Mean Girls 2,” and a hit Broadway musical created by Fey herself. Now, Fey has announced that she will reimagine the musical as a major motion picture, giving fans yet another way to enjoy the beloved story.

The movie follows Cady Heron (Lindsay Lohan) as she navigates her way through the American school system after her family moves back to the U.S. from Africa. Early on in her high school journey, she is asked to join The Plastics, a popular girl clique run by Regina George (McAdams). However, Cady finds herself in hot water when she develops a crush on Regina’s ex-boyfriend, Aaron Samuels (Jonathan Bennett).

For McAdams, the movie was a career-defining moment. “I have to thank Regina George for giving me some longevity,” she told The New York Times in 2018. “I’m forever grateful to Tina Fey and Mark Waters. I remember when I read it, I called my agent right away and said, ‘I will play any part in this, please, please, please.’ I was at the beginning of my career, and it was a lofty thing out there, that I really, really, really wanted to do.”

Seyfried, too, credits “Mean Girls” with helping her career take off. “I’ve just worked a long time. I’ve gotten a lot of cool opportunities here and there, and I’ve made some good choices with the help of my amazing team,” she told the Los Angeles Times in 2013. “I still look back at ‘Mean Girls’ as my best work.”

Since its release, “Mean Girls” has become a cultural touchstone, with people of all ages quoting lines from the movie and dressing up as their favorite characters for Halloween. The movie has also inspired countless parodies, including a recent one from Netflix’s “The Politician,” in which the show’s characters perform a musical version of “Mean Girls” for their school’s production.

For Fey, the success of “Mean Girls” has been a career highlight. “It’s always amazing to me that people still talk about it and watch it,” she told Entertainment Weekly in 2018. “I think it’s because it’s a really good movie. I don’t think any of us expected it to be as successful as it was.”

With the upcoming movie adaptation of the Broadway musical, fans will have yet another way to enjoy the timeless story of Cady and The Plastics. While the details of the new movie are still unknown, fans can rest assured that Fey will do everything in her power to make sure it lives up to the original.
