The Speaker, Nasarawa State House of Assembly, Alhaji Ibrahim Abdulllahi, says that the House has passed the 2019 Local Government amended bill into law to empower the state governor to create fourth-class traditional chiefdoms in the state.

This was contained in a statement issued on Sunday by his Press Secretary, Mr Jibrin Gwamna, and made available to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Keffi.

The statement said that the speaker announced the passage of the bill during an emergency sitting of the house held on May 24.

Abdullahi revealed that before now, the Nasarawa State Local Government Law 2018, Section 51, sub-section 1, gives the state governor power to create 1st class, 2nd class and 3rd class status only.

The statement, however, said with the new amendment, the state governor is now empowered to create fourth class traditional chiefdoms so as to give some communities in the state a sense of belonging.

According to the statement, the Chairman House standing committee on Judiciary and member representing Lafia Central, Alhaji Abubakar Imam, said the amendment was timely considering how various communities are agitating for chiefdoms in the state.

The statement maintained that members unanimously adopted the report after the Majority Leader of the House, Alhaji Tanko Tunga (APC-Awe North), moved a motion for the third reading of the bill.

The statement said that the motion was seconded by the Minority Leader and member representing Doma North constituency, Alhaji Mohammed Okpede.

Abdullahi added that more communities will benefit from the new law through getting chiefdoms in the state.

The speaker restated the continued commitment of the House to pass resolutions and enact bills that would have direct bearing on the lives of people of the state.
