Why Gary O'Neil was sacked by Wolves – breakdown

In a move that has sent shockwaves through the football community, Wolverhampton Wanderers have officially parted ways with manager Gary O’Neil after a disheartening 2-1 defeat at home to newly promoted Ipswich Town. With the club languishing second from the bottom in the Premier League table, accumulating only nine points from sixteen matches, the decision to dismiss O’Neil was not unexpected.

Defensive Woes Plague the Team

Gary O’Neil took the reins at Wolves last summer with the ambitious goal of solidifying the club’s position in the Premier League. However, the reality has been starkly different. The team has struggled immensely in defense, conceding a staggering 40 goals this season, which translates to an average of 2.5 goals per game. The defensive frailties have been alarming, with Wolves managing to keep just one clean sheet in their sixteen league outings.

The stats paint a grim picture: in 14 of their 16 matches, they have allowed two or more goals, leaving fans and management alike frustrated. Such a dismal defensive record is far from what is expected at the Premier League level, leading many to question the coaching methods employed under O’Neil’s leadership.

Set Piece Vulnerabilities and Discipline Issues

One of the most glaring issues contributing to O’Neil’s dismissal has been the team’s inability to defend set pieces effectively. A concerning 33% of the goals conceded this season have come from dead-ball situations. The defeat to Ipswich was particularly telling, as their winning goal marked the 13th time this season that Wolves have succumbed to a set piece. This clear weakness pointed to poor coaching and a lack of preparation.

Moreover, Wolves have been one of the most undisciplined teams in the league, ranking among the top three for fouls committed per game, averaging 13 fouls. This indiscipline has cost them dearly, as they have conceded five penalties, all of which have resulted in goals. The team has also been plagued by errors, with nine mistakes leading to shots, three of which found the back of the net. Notably, Wolves lead the league in own goals, having scored three this season.

Offensive Struggles and Lack of Cohesion

On the offensive front, O’Neil’s strategy has come under scrutiny. The team has struggled to establish a cohesive attacking pattern, with many of their 24 goals coming from the individual brilliance of Brazilian forward Matheus Cunha. Cunha has been responsible for a remarkable 33% of Wolves’ Premier League goals this season, scoring eight times despite an expected goals (xG) tally of just 3.7. This reliance on individual talent rather than a well-structured team approach has raised concerns among the Wolves board.

Wolves’ buildup play has also been criticized for its predictability and lack of creativity. The team has been overly reliant on fast transitions and counterattacks, which have proven easy for opponents to counter. Ranking 19th in the league for chances created, with only 29 big chances this season, it is evident that the attacking strategy was not effective under O’Neil’s guidance.

Impact of Player Departures

The departure of key players in recent transfer windows has also played a role in the club’s struggles. The absence of vital contributions from players like Pedro Neto and Max Kilman has been keenly felt. While O’Neil may have needed more time to implement his vision, the mounting evidence suggested he was struggling to cope with the challenges at Wolves.

In light of these issues, the Wolves board has made the difficult decision to part ways with Gary O’Neil. As the club now embarks on the search for a new manager, fans and analysts alike will be keenly watching to see how they address the pressing issues that have plagued the team this season.
