In a historic move, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has appointed the Amanyanabo of Twon Brass Kingdom of Bayelsa State, His Eminence, King Alfred Papapreye Diette-Spiff, Seriya II, as the Chancellor of the Nigeria Maritime University (NMU), located in Okerenkoko, in Warri South-West Local Government Area of Delta State. This announcement came as part of the institution’s maiden convocation ceremony on its campus.

Representing President Tinubu at the event was the Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Mr. Festus Keyamo. The appointment of King Alfred Papapreye Diette-Spiff as Chancellor is a significant step towards the transformation of NMU into a leading institution in the world.

The convocation ceremony also saw the university conferring a Doctor of Philosophy in Education (Honoris Causa) on ex-militant leader, High Chief Oweizide Government Ekpemupolo, popularly known as Tompolo. Additionally, a Doctor of Letters was bestowed upon King Alfred Papapreye Diette-Spiff in recognition of their contributions to the growth and development of the university.

In his acceptance speech after being installed as Chancellor, King Alfred Papapreye Diette-Spiff pledged to ensure the university’s transformation into a world-class institution. He expressed his commitment to making NMU the maritime institution of first choice for those seeking to build a career in the maritime industry and contribute to the creation of employment and wealth in the highly competitive global maritime economy.

President Tinubu, in his address at the convocation, expressed his understanding of the university’s vision to become the premier maritime institution for aspiring professionals in the industry. He emphasized the importance of NMU’s role in building the country’s capacity in maritime technology and business, aligning with global best practices to position Nigeria among the world’s leading maritime economies.

While acknowledging the challenges and constraints faced by the university in its early stages, President Tinubu assured the institution of the government’s unwavering support. He reaffirmed the government’s commitment to addressing the university’s needs and ensuring its continued growth and success.
