The Tina Fey Taylor Swift feud became one of pop culture’s most awkward celebrity moments after a joke at the 2013 Golden Globes unexpectedly spiraled into years of tension, public comments, and plenty of side-eye from fans.
At the time, Tina Fey and Amy Poehler were hosting the awards show together, and honestly, most viewers expected their usual playful roasting of celebrities. That’s pretty normal for award shows. Almost everyone gets teased at some point.
But one joke aimed at Taylor Swift hit differently.
During the opening monologue, Fey jokingly warned Swift to stay away from actor Michael J. Fox’s son, who had recently become a topic of gossip after attending an event with the singer. Poehler chimed in with a softer “or go for it,” but Fey doubled down by suggesting Swift needed some time alone to “learn about herself.”

The audience laughed. The cameras moved on. But Swift clearly didn’t find it funny.
A couple of months later, during an interview with Vanity Fair, Swift responded in a way that immediately grabbed headlines. Referencing a famous quote often associated with women supporting women, she said there’s “a special place in hell for women who don’t help other women.”
And just like that, what might have been a passing joke suddenly turned into a celebrity feud people couldn’t stop discussing.
Tina Fey And Amy Poehler Reacted Very Differently
Interestingly, Amy Poehler and Tina Fey handled Swift’s response in completely different ways afterward.
Poehler seemed genuinely uncomfortable that Swift had been hurt by the joke. She publicly said she felt bad if the singer was upset and described herself as a feminist who respected Swift as a talented young woman. She even joked that if she was going to hell, it probably had more to do with “boring tax stuff” than celebrity jokes.
Fey, though? She wasn’t quite as apologetic.
Instead, Fey defended the moment by insisting it was simply a lighthearted joke. She later explained in interviews that she thought Swift would understand the humor in what she called a “crazy aunt” type of comment.
But the tension didn’t really disappear.
At the following year’s Golden Globes in 2014, Fey referenced Swift’s “special place in hell” quote while congratulating Amy Poehler during the ceremony. It was brief, but people definitely noticed it.
That moment made it pretty clear the situation was still lingering in the background, even if everyone was pretending it wasn’t that serious.

Things Got More Awkward Behind The Scenes
Not long after the Vanity Fair interview, Tina Fey had another moment that added fuel to the story.
While walking through New York City in 2013, paparazzi asked her about Swift, and Fey responded with a harsh remark that quickly spread online. The clip later disappeared from circulation, but by then, plenty of fans had already seen it and formed opinions.
For Swift supporters, it felt like the joke had crossed into unnecessary territory.
Then, in 2015, Fey appeared to reference Swift again through her work on “Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt.” In one scene, the “special place in hell for women who don’t help other women” line was repeated almost word for word.
Fans immediately connected it back to Swift’s interview comments.
At that point, the feud had become one of those strange celebrity conflicts where nobody was openly fighting all the time, but the little references and callbacks kept the story alive.
Amy Poehler Eventually Seemed To Move On
Years later, things appeared to soften — at least between Swift and Amy Poehler.
During the 2020 Golden Globes, Poehler and Swift shared the stage while presenting an award together. The interaction looked friendly and relaxed, and many viewers took it as a sign that any bad feelings had mostly faded away.

Interestingly, Tina Fey wasn’t part of that moment.
That absence didn’t go unnoticed online, especially by longtime fans who had followed the feud from the beginning. Some people even joked that it felt like a subtle full-circle moment after everything that happened back in 2013.
Whether Fey and Swift ever truly moved past the awkwardness privately is something neither of them has really addressed in detail. But honestly, compared to some celebrity feuds, this one feels more complicated than explosive.
It started with a joke, turned personal very quickly, and then just sort of lingered in pop culture history for years afterward.
And somehow, people are still talking about it more than a decade later.
