Donald Trump’s golfing escapades have always seemed to attract attention, haven’t they? It’s like, even when he’s supposedly relaxing, there’s always some sort of drama brewing. Most recently, a couple of videos have resurfaced, sparking fresh debate about whether the former president plays by the rules on the golf course.
One video, initially shared on X, shows Trump’s caddy seemingly tossing a ball onto the ground right before Trump steps out of his golf cart. Now, some of Trump’s supporters were quick to defend the action, suggesting it was a legitimate “drop ball.” But others, like Scottish golf commentator Andrew Cotter, were a bit more skeptical. On his podcast, Cotter admitted he was hesitant to jump to conclusions, but he also noted that the optics were, well, not great. “All I’ll say is … it looked very, very bad,” he said, emphasizing how it appeared the caddy was trying to be discreet about the whole thing. It makes you wonder, doesn’t it? Was it just an innocent move, or was something else going on?

A History of Questionable Golfing Ethics
It’s probably not surprising to hear that this isn’t the first time Trump’s golfing ethics have been called into question. Actually, there’s a pretty long history of accusations and anecdotes floating around.
Remember back in 2016, when Samuel L. Jackson told a story on “Late Night with Seth Meyers” about playing golf with Trump? According to Jackson, Trump hit his ball into a lake, but his caddy miraculously “found” it later, not in the lake, of course. And naturally, it happened at one of Trump’s own golf courses. It’s hard to know what to make of these stories, but they definitely add to the narrative, right?
“Commander in Cheat”: A Deep Dive into Trump’s Golfing Antics
Then there’s Rick Reilly’s book, “Commander in Cheat: How Golf Explains Trump,” which came out in 2019. Reilly, who has played golf with Trump himself, makes some pretty outrageous claims about the former president’s behavior on the course. He talked about it on MSNBC too, mentioning tournaments Trump claimed to have won even when he wasn’t even in the state at the time. He also pointed out that Trump’s impressive golfing record seemed to be mostly based on his performance at his own clubs. But when he played at places like Pebble Beach, where there were actual rules and judges, he didn’t exactly shine. It’s almost like the home-field advantage was a little too advantageous, perhaps?
Even the 2024 presidential debate between Trump and Joe Biden brought up the topic of golf. Social media users started sharing videos of Trump’s golf swing, and, well, let’s just say it wasn’t exactly the most graceful thing anyone had ever seen. But maybe the real story wasn’t the swing itself, but the caddies who were standing nearby. It makes you wonder if more people will start paying closer attention to what the caddies are up to, doesn’t it?

So, what are we to make of all this? It’s hard to say for sure, but one thing is clear: Trump’s golf game is more than just a game. It’s a source of endless speculation, debate, and, let’s be honest, amusement. Whether he’s bending the rules or just having a bit of fun, it’s safe to say that Trump’s golfing adventures will continue to be a topic of conversation for years to come.
