Despite marrying a member of the royal family, Jack Brooksbank is yet to be bestowed with a royal title. While Meghan Markle was given the title Duchess of Sussex on her wedding day, Eugenie’s husband’s name remains the same as prior to getting married. The reason for this, in part, is because of where Eugenie and Harry are respectively in line to the throne. As of this writing, Harry is sixth in line to the British throne, per the royal family’s official website, whereas Eugenie is ninth, and will be bumped to tenth when Meghan and Harry’s baby arrives.

As a male heir to the throne, Prince Harry automatically inherited a dukedom on his wedding day, with his wife receiving the title of Duchess. However, as royal historian Marlene Koenig tells Town & Country, “There is no precedent for giving a peerage to the commoner husband of a princess on the wedding day.”  The outlet also reported, “If he is not granted a title on his wedding day by the Queen … he will remain Mr. Jack Brooksbank.” As such, Eugenie’s husband has retained his pre-marital name, as has the princess herself. Although as the BBC points out, Eugenie “will have the option to take his surname,” but for now at least, she appears to have kept her own title and name.
