Steve Martin Becomes a Father at 67

Renowned actor and comedian, Steve Martin, is known for his portrayal of a father figure in several films, including “Father of the Bride,” “Parenthood,” and “Cheaper by the Dozen.” However, it may come as a surprise to many that the actor did not welcome his first child until he was 67 years old.

Martin and his wife, Anne Stringfield, welcomed their only child, a daughter, in December 2012. In an interview with AARP The Magazine in 2017, Martin opened up about his decision to delay fatherhood. He admitted that he was too focused on his acting career to have children earlier in life. “I think if I’d had a child earlier, I would have been a lousy father because I would have misplaced my attention on my career,” he shared.

Despite delaying fatherhood, Martin is now relishing the joys of being a new dad in his late 60s. “Oh, it’s fantastic,” the actor told Daily Telegraph (via Vanity Fair). He added, “You have all the time in the world. You’re all set and secure in life, and you’re not building your career, so you have a lot of time.”

While some may question the actor’s decision to become a father at such an advanced age, Martin’s experience is not unique. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the number of fathers over the age of 40 has steadily increased over the last few decades. In 2015, 9 percent of fathers were over the age of 40, compared to just 4 percent in 1972.

Delayed fatherhood has become increasingly common in Hollywood as well. In recent years, several celebrities have become fathers later in life. Mick Jagger welcomed his eighth child at the age of 73, while Robert De Niro became a father for the sixth time at the age of 68.

While there are advantages to becoming a father later in life, there are also potential risks. According to a study published in the Journal of the American Medical Association, children born to fathers over the age of 45 are more likely to have certain health issues, such as autism and schizophrenia.

Despite the potential risks, Martin is enjoying fatherhood to the fullest. In an interview with The New York Times in 2015, he admitted that he was “having a fantastic experience” as a new dad. “I’m paying attention to her, and I’m loving it,” he shared.

In conclusion, Steve Martin’s decision to become a father at 67 may have surprised some, but it is a choice that he does not regret. As more and more men delay fatherhood, Martin’s experience serves as a reminder that there is no one-size-fits-all approach to parenthood.
