In a significant move aimed at promoting legal compliance and safeguarding road users, the police in Jigawa State have issued a strong reminder to vehicle owners about the critical importance of third-party insurance. This public advisory comes amid rising concerns regarding the number of uninsured vehicles on the State’s roads.

Insurer Compliance: A Clear Directive

The announcement was made by the Jigawa State Police Command’s spokesman, SP Lawan Shiisu Adam, in a statement released to wowplus.net this past Sunday. The advisory reflects the directive from the Inspector General of Police, Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, which was communicated to all state police commissioners across Nigeria. The emphasis on ensuring all vehicles are adequately insured isn’t just a bureaucratic formality; it stems from Section 68 of the Insurance Act 2003. This law stipulates the necessity for every vehicle owner to have third-party insurance, which serves as a safety net, protecting both the vehicle owner and others on the streets in case of accidents or damages.

SP Adam urged all motorists to secure valid third-party insurance policies exclusively from licensed insurance companies that have been authorized by the National Insurance Commission (NAICOM) to operate in the realm of motor insurance. He pointed out that failing to carry such insurance not only endangers the driver and other road users but can also lead to severe legal repercussions. By obtaining third-party insurance, vehicle owners can effectively protect themselves from potential liabilities that could arise from road accidents.

Facing the Consequences of Uninsured Vehicles

The warning comes against a backdrop of increasing incidences where uninsured vehicles become embroiled in accidents, resulting in complications not just for the vehicle owners but for innocent parties as well. In many cases, the lack of insurance leads to lengthy legal battles and financial burdens that could have been avoided had the vehicle owner adhered to existing laws.

The police spokesperson cautioned vehicle owners who have yet to secure third-party coverage to act promptly, underscoring the need to avoid “embarrassment” in the event of an accident. He highlighted that police checks are frequent, and officers will be vigilant in identifying vehicles that lack proper insurance documentation, which can lead to fines, bans, or even legal action.

In an era where road safety and responsible vehicle ownership have become paramount, this message resonates not just with drivers but with the community at large. Adhering to mandatory insurance policies is essential in fostering a culture of accountability and safety on the roads.

Police Professionalism: A Call for Integrity

In conjunction with the announcement regarding third-party insurance, the police commissioner also emphasized the importance of professionalism among officers. SP Adam stated that officers must maintain high ethical standards, emphasizing the importance of respecting human rights and avoiding any form of extortion. The integrity of law enforcement plays a crucial role in public trust, and the Jigawa State Police Command aims to reinforce that trust by operating transparently and fairly during their enforcement duties.

The police have taken a proactive approach to educate the public about their rights and responsibilities while operating a vehicle. The messaging focuses on creating awareness around not only the legal implications of driving without insurance but also the ethical responsibility of ensuring that all road users are protected.

As the police continue their efforts to promote road safety and legal compliance, it remains crucial for vehicle owners to take heed of this advisory. By securing third-party insurance, motorists not only shield themselves from legal troubles but also contribute to a safer driving environment for everyone on the road.

In the end, the core message from the Jigawa State Police is clear: Being a responsible vehicle owner means ensuring your vehicle is insured, not just for your protection, but for the well-being of all community members. It is a small yet significant step toward building a safer, more accountable transportation landscape.
