Former NBC News anchor Matt Lauer has found himself at the center of yet another controversy, seven years after his high-profile firing from the “Today” show amid serious allegations of sexual misconduct. This time, the spotlight is on claims of animal cruelty involving sheep on his expansive property in New Zealand.
On December 30, PETA (People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals) released a press statement alleging that sheep raised for wool on Lauer’s land were subjected to extreme mistreatment. Although Lauer’s property, known as Hunter Valley Station, is not directly operated by him — local sheep farmers rent the land — PETA is holding him accountable for the alleged abuses occurring there.
PETA’s investigation reportedly uncovered shocking footage of sheep being mistreated, with workers seen engaging in violent acts such as stepping on, dragging, and kicking the animals. In an open letter addressed to Lauer, PETA Executive Vice President Tracy Reiman expressed their concerns, stating, “We are writing to inform you of a new PETA Asia investigation exposing extreme cruelty to sheep on your New Zealand property, Hunter Valley Station, where workers violently stepped on, dragged, threw, and kicked sheep.” The letter went on to label Lauer’s property as “one of the worst offenders” in their findings.

In response to the allegations, a representative for Lauer has firmly denied any prior knowledge of the alleged mistreatment. Speaking to the New York Post, Lauer’s spokesperson emphasized that he was “deeply disturbed and saddened” to learn about the claims and has initiated his investigation into the operations of the tenants renting his land. “When all the facts are known, he will take immediate and appropriate actions,” the representative added.
PETA supported Lauer’s account of launching an investigation, stating, “Publicly releasing undercover investigations before notifying implicated parties, like Mr. Lauer, holds them responsible and makes it impossible for them to ignore the cruelty they have the power to stop.” However, the organization is adamant that the evidence they have gathered points to serious issues that need addressing.
This latest incident comes just a month after a report from People magazine detailed Lauer’s life since his departure from NBC. The article highlighted that Lauer, who has not returned to the media spotlight since his firing, has been reconnecting with friends and focusing on his personal life. A friend of Lauer shared insights into his current state, saying, “He’s doing well and happy.” This friend noted that while Lauer faced challenges in the year following his exit from NBC, he has since shifted his focus away from a career in journalism, stating, “He doesn’t work and he doesn’t have to. He’s not looking to.”
Despite his previous status as a prominent journalist, Lauer seems to have little interest in returning to the fast-paced world of news reporting. The friend explained, “He was a journalist at heart and he did some impactful political interviews that spanned his career, but the current cycle of politics isn’t anything even people who have been doing it for a long time are excited to cover.”

As the investigation into the sheep farm continues, many wonder how this controversy will unfold and its impact on Lauer’s already tumultuous reputation. PETA’s allegations add another layer to his already complex history, and how Lauer will navigate this latest challenge remains to be seen.
The saga of Matt Lauer reminds us of the ongoing scrutiny public figures face, especially in light of past controversies. As more details emerge regarding the allegations of animal cruelty on his property, Lauer’s response and actions will be closely monitored by both supporters and critics.
