The Kogi State House of Assembly recently held an induction course for the 25 newly elected members of the state constituency. The one-day course was held at the chambers of the Kogi State House of Assembly on Wednesday.

The Special Adviser to the Governor on Legislative Matters, Hon Haruna Musa Idoko, advised the inductees to ensure peace and unity in the cause of their legislative duties, despite the fact that all of them are not of the same party. He stressed the need to toe party lines during voting for the leadership of the House, saying that doing otherwise would rock the boat of the state and would not be of benefit to them.

Musa noted that legislative business is not learnt elsewhere but on the job and stressed the need to be friendly with the legislative staff members who will be assisting them on the job. He urged the new lawmakers to take their roles seriously and work towards the development of the state.

The chairman of the Assembly Service Commission, Alhaji Andas Abdulmalik Momohjimoh, stressed the need for lawmakers to be well acquainted with their prospective aides. According to Momohjimoh, prospective aides who will later be their image-makers should be capable of representing them anywhere.

In his lecture titled “Principles and Practise of Emotional Intelligence for Leaders,” retired Deputy Clerk, Administration and General Services, Martins Enimola, stressed the need for lawmakers to manage their emotions while making decisions. He added that lawmakers should identify themselves and the plights of their colleagues for effective and efficient performances.

The induction course was well attended by the newly elected members of the state constituency. They expressed their appreciation for the opportunity to learn from experienced professionals in the field of legislative practice.

One of the newly elected members, Hon. Halima Ibrahim, expressed her gratitude for the knowledge shared during the course. She said, “I am grateful for the opportunity to learn from experienced professionals in the field of legislative practice. I am confident that the knowledge gained will be put to good use in the course of my legislative duties.”

Another newly elected member, Hon. Mohammed Sani, said, “The induction course was an eye-opener for me. I learned a lot about the principles and practices of emotional intelligence for leaders, and I believe that this knowledge will be useful in my role as a lawmaker.”
