In a decisive move to tackle escalating security threats, the Gombe State Government has imposed a night curfew, restricting movement between midnight and 5:00 a.m. The curfew, which takes effect from Friday, February 7, 2025, was announced by the Gombe State Police Command in a bid to safeguard residents and curb potential criminal activities.

The announcement came through a statement issued on Thursday by DSP Buhari Abdullahi, the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO). Posted on his official Facebook page, the statement highlighted the urgent need for the curfew as a response to increasing security challenges in the state.

Rising Security Threats Prompt Immediate Action

DSP Buhari explained that the decision to impose the curfew was not taken lightly. “The restriction on movement is in response to the increasing security threats facing the people of Gombe,” he stated. “The police are fully prepared to address the situation and ensure the safety of all residents.”

While specific details about the nature of the threats were not disclosed, the statement hinted at a rise in criminal activities that have raised concerns among both authorities and residents. The curfew is seen as a proactive measure to prevent further escalation and provide law enforcement agencies with the necessary control to maintain order during high-risk periods.

The police spokesperson also assured the public that the command remains committed to its primary duty of protecting lives and property. “Our priority is to ensure that Gombe remains secure, and we are working round the clock to achieve this,” DSP Buhari added.

Public Cooperation Key to Success

In the statement, DSP Buhari appealed to residents to comply with the curfew regulations, emphasizing that the success of the measure largely depends on public cooperation. He urged parents and guardians to take responsibility by ensuring their children and wards adhere to the curfew timings.

“We call on parents to warn their children against violating the curfew order,” he said. “Anyone caught flouting the rule will face strict consequences as stipulated by the law.”

The warning underscores the seriousness of the situation and the determination of the police to enforce the curfew without compromise. Residents have been advised to plan their activities accordingly to avoid any inconveniences caused by the restriction.

A Broader Effort to Restore Safety

The imposition of the curfew is part of a broader strategy by the Gombe State Government and security agencies to address the state’s security challenges. While the immediate focus is on nighttime security, it is expected that this measure will complement other efforts aimed at strengthening safety across the state.

Security experts have welcomed the move, describing it as a necessary step to deter criminal elements. “Nighttime is often when criminal activities peak, and a curfew can significantly reduce opportunities for such acts,” said a local security analyst who spoke on condition of anonymity. “However, its effectiveness will depend on how well it is enforced and the level of public support.”

Residents have expressed mixed reactions to the announcement. While some lauded the government’s proactive stance, others voiced concerns about the inconvenience the curfew might cause, especially for those whose livelihoods depend on nighttime activities.

As Gombe grapples with these security challenges, the curfew serves as a reminder of the importance of vigilance and collective responsibility. Authorities have reiterated their commitment to ensuring the safety of all residents, even as they work to address the root causes of the threats.

With the cooperation of the public and the dedication of law enforcement agencies, Gombe State aims to restore peace and security, allowing residents to go about their daily lives without fear.
