Chicago’s Romantic Drama Continues to Ignite: A Look at the Love Interests Across the City

Chicago Fire lit a flame in 2012 and since then, the Windy City has been filled with some of the hottest romances in the television world. From the beginning, the show has entranced audiences with its captivating storylines, sparks of chemistry, and heart-wrenching moments. While the drama might revolve around the dangerous lifestyles of Chicago firefighters and paramedics, love has always been at the heart of the show’s charm.

What started as a steamy romance on Chicago Fire, the fire department drama, branched out into the spin-off shows Chicago PD and Chicago Med, where love continued to endure amidst the high-stress lifestyle professionals of the Windy City. But not all love is roses and sunshine in Chicago. The characters encountered more than a few stumbling blocks and tragic love stories along the way.

For fans who obsessed over Casey and Dawson, the forceful flame between them subsided when they eventually parted ways. When Natalie and Will finally tied the knot, they faced yet another turbulent moment after her blood-soaked wedding dress foreshadowed a difficult road ahead. Then there were the rocky relationships, like the on-again-off-again romance between Severide and Stella. Despite the tumultuous journey, fans could not escape the electric chemistry between them, and they ultimately married in season 10, earlier this year.

The creative team behind the shows are aware that some couples work better than others, even if the romantic pairings can be fundamentally flawed. “That’s how they are in real life. They’re hilarious together in a way that they’re not with other people. They just have this magic,” said Derek Haas, co-creator of Chicago Fire, about Taylor Kinney and Miranda Rae Mayo, who play Severide and Stella.

Although not all couples started out romantically, some of them evolved into love interests over time. Take Casey and Brett, for example. Initially, they were just co-workers, with Brett being Casey’s ex-wife’s best friend. Over time, they began to develop sparks despite the rocky road of separation, leaving audiences invested in their potential relationship. “Real life throws curveballs at you. Real life never goes exactly how you think it’s going to. People were like, ‘They were so in love, this doesn’t make sense!’ I’ve known many people who were so in love, and their relationship ended, and it didn’t make sense to anyone. Then you pick up the pieces and either move on or try to fix it,” said Haas addressing fans’ concerns about the sudden change.

Chicago Fire’s season 9 finale saw audiences finally witness the romantic pairing of Casey and Brett, albeit briefly, before Casey left for Oregon. Fans were left with mixed emotions – excited to see the couple together, yet sad to see their separation so soon after it happened.

The City of Chicago has witnessed love stories full of fireworks, as well as heartbreaking moments and missed opportunities. Yet all the relationships have kept audiences glued to their screens, eagerly waiting to see what twist or turn will occur next in one of their favorite on-screen pairings. Will any of them go the distance? Only time will tell in the upcoming season of Chicago Fire, which is set to premiere this fall.
