Carrie Fisher love of her life may surprise some fans because, despite her highly public romances with Paul Simon and Bryan Lourd, the late actress once admitted that another man completely captured her heart for years.
For most people, Fisher’s love life seemed pretty well documented already. Her rocky relationship with singer Paul Simon became tabloid material multiple times over the years, and her later relationship with Hollywood talent agent Bryan Lourd also drew major attention — especially after the painful breakup that followed. But according to Fisher herself, neither man ended up being the great love story of her life.

Instead, that title apparently belonged to someone much closer to her during the early days of “Star Wars.”
In her revealing 2016 memoir “The Princess Diarist,” Fisher opened up about her secret affair with Harrison Ford while filming the original “Star Wars” movie back in the late 1970s. At the time, she was just 19 years old. Ford, meanwhile, was 33 and married to his first wife, Mary Marquardt.
The relationship remained hidden from the public for decades.
And honestly, when Fisher finally decided to talk about it openly, many fans were stunned by just how deeply she had fallen for him.
Carrie Fisher Admitted She Loved Harrison Ford Deeply
According to Fisher, the affair lasted around three months during filming for “Star Wars: A New Hope.” What surprised her most, she later explained, was that someone like Harrison Ford even noticed her in the first place.
Fisher admitted she was extremely insecure at the time and still figuring herself out. Despite becoming internationally famous as Princess Leia, she said she didn’t actually see herself as particularly experienced or confident behind the scenes.
Ford, however, apparently viewed her very differently.
In interviews promoting her memoir, Fisher reflected on the large age gap between them and suggested Ford may have assumed she was far more mature than she really was at 19. Eventually, though, she felt he started to understand how vulnerable she actually was.
Even decades later, Fisher still seemed emotionally connected to that chapter of her life. She openly admitted that her feelings for Ford had been incredibly intense and, perhaps painfully, not fully returned in the same way.
At one point, she described it as “unreciprocated love,” which honestly made the entire story feel a little sadder than many fans expected. It wasn’t just a glamorous Hollywood affair to her. It clearly meant far more.

Her Relationships With Paul Simon And Bryan Lourd Were Complicated
Although Harrison Ford became the emotional center of her memoir revelations, Fisher’s other relationships were also major parts of her life.
Her romance with singer Paul Simon was famously passionate but turbulent. The two married briefly in the 1980s after years of dating on and off, though arguments and emotional clashes reportedly became a constant issue between them. Eventually, the relationship ended for good around 1990.
Later, Fisher began dating powerful Hollywood talent agent Bryan Lourd. While they never married, they welcomed daughter Billie Lourd in 1992, who later became an actress herself.
Their relationship eventually collapsed in a very public and painful way after Lourd left Fisher for another man. At the time, the breakup generated major headlines and became one of the more difficult periods in Fisher’s personal life.
Still, even after those highly visible romances, Fisher later admitted that the emotional impact Harrison Ford had on her remained unmatched.
That revelation shocked people partly because Ford and Fisher rarely discussed the affair publicly before her memoir. Fans had spent years speculating about chemistry between the “Star Wars” stars, but few expected Fisher to describe him as such a defining figure in her emotional life.
The Affair Stayed With Carrie Fisher For Decades
What makes the story especially emotional is the fact that Fisher kept those feelings mostly private for so long.
By the time she published “The Princess Diarist,” she seemed more reflective and honest about the complicated emotions she carried from her younger years. She acknowledged that the affair happened during an intense moment in both their lives and admitted she still cared deeply for Ford decades later.
She even revealed that some part of those feelings never fully disappeared.

At the same time, Fisher also spoke warmly about her friendship with Mark Hamill, explaining that while she loved him deeply too, it felt more sibling-like compared to the romantic attachment she had toward Ford.
There’s something strangely bittersweet about the whole story now. Maybe because fans mostly remember Carrie Fisher as sharp, funny, fearless, and emotionally guarded in public. Yet underneath all of that, she apparently carried this unresolved love story for most of her adult life.
And in the end, she decided to finally tell the world about it herself.
