As California Governor Gavin Newsom and Florida Governor Ron DeSantis gear up for their much-anticipated televised debate, tensions increase over proposed debate rules and conditions. Newsom’s spokesperson, Nathan Click, criticizes DeSantis’ counterproposal, calling it “a joke.” Meanwhile, DeSantis, trailing behind former President Donald Trump in the polls, remains tight-lipped on the matter. Let’s delve into the details.

In an intriguing twist of events, California Gov. Gavin Newsom and Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis find themselves caught in a heated debate even before taking the stage. As the two political heavyweights butt heads, their clash becomes the headline of many news outlets.

Nathan Click, the spokesperson for Gov. Newsom, didn’t hold back as he derided DeSantis’ proposed set of rules for the upcoming debate. In a scathing statement, Click described DeSantis’ counterproposal as riddled with crutches designed to conceal the Florida governor’s “insecurity and ineptitude.” Click further added, “It’s no wonder Trump is kicking his ass.” The acerbic words fuel speculation about the underlying tensions between DeSantis and the former President.

DeSantis, who once held the spotlight as a frontrunner for the 2024 Republican presidential nomination, now finds himself trailing nearly 40 percentage points behind the thrice-indicted Trump, according to FiveThirtyEight. The governor seemed initially eager to accept Newsom’s debate challenge, as he assured Fox News personality Sean Hannity that he was game for it. However, since then, DeSantis has been tacking on additional conditions, causing further friction in the negotiations.

Politico Playbook reported that DeSantis has started imposing various conditions on his participation. Instead of traditional opening statements, he suggested that he and Newsom should prepare a two-minute video to “make the case for their governing philosophy.” Additionally, DeSantis insisted on having a live audience, a proposal that Newsom vehemently opposes.

Despite their differences, the two governors have reached a partial agreement. The debate is expected to take place on November 8 in Georgia, with Hannity serving as the moderator. Both sides have also agreed that the debate should last for a total of 90 minutes, providing ample time for a comprehensive discussion of vital issues.

While Newsom doesn’t harbor presidential ambitions, he has strategically positioned himself on the national stage by openly challenging Republican governors on contentious topics such as abortion access, gun safety, and immigration. In his latest social media post on X (previously known as Twitter), Newsom voiced his disagreement with Florida’s decision to target Advanced Placement psychology classes, expressing concern over the potential stifling of education.

Newsom’s tweet read: “TEACHING PSYCHOLOGY IS NOW BANNED IN FLORIDA. MORE TEACHERS SILENCED. MORE CURRICULUM BANNED. MORE BOOKS TAKEN OFF OUR SCHOOLS’ SHELVES. GOOD FOR THE @COLLEGEBOARD STANDING UP FOR EDUCATION AND AGAINST THESE EXTREMIST POLICIES. HTTPS://T.CO/TX6VWCVOM1”

This tweet follows reports that the College Board announced Florida’s Department of Education claim that “teaching foundational content on sexual orientation and gender identity is illegal under state law.” Consequently, the College Board stated that the course would be prohibited. However, subsequent reports from The New York Times indicated that the course would be offered in the fall, leaving lingering questions regarding the exact status and implications of the ban.
