It’s been a long, long wait. Twenty-nine years, to be exact. For an entire generation of Nottingham Forest supporters, European nights have been something from history books or stories told by older relatives. But this week, that wait is over. The famous red shirts will step back onto the continental stage, and they’re doing it in one of Spain’s most atmospheric cities, facing a formidable test against Real Betis.

The setting is the Estadio La Cartuja in Seville, a neutral venue for Betis while their home ground is redeveloped, but still very much Spanish turf. The hosts, managed by the experienced Manuel Pellegrini, are coming off a strong win and seem settled. Forest, under new manager Ange Postecoglou, are still searching for their first win and a bit of consistency. It’s a classic European clash of established quality against ambitious, but perhaps unpredictable, newcomers.

The Team News: Who’s Fit and Who’s Missing?

For Real Betis, the main absence is the creative maestro Isco, who is still recovering from an ankle injury. They’ll also be without young forward Pablo Garcia, who is away on international duty. There are late fitness tests for a few key defensive and midfield players, which could force Pellegrini into some last-minute adjustments.

Forest’s injury sheet has a few concerns as well. Nicolas Dominguez and Ola Aina are likely to miss out, and there’s a significant administrative blow with Oleksandr Zinchenko and Omari Hutchinson not registered for the Europa League squad. All eyes will be on the fitness of centre-back Murillo. If he can prove his fitness after a short absence, his pace and composure will be vital. After a lively substitute appearance last weekend, Callum Hudson-Odoi is making a strong case for a starting spot.

The Tactical Chess Match

This game promises to be a fascinating battle of contrasting styles. Pellegrini’s Betis are a well-oiled machine. They typically set up in a fluid 4-2-3-1 formation, focused on controlling the tempo of the game. They build patiently from the back, using their double-pivot in midfield to circulate the ball, and look to create overloads in dangerous areas. The full-backs, especially the adventurous Héctor Bellerín, push high to pin opponents back. In attack, the movement of striker Cucho Hernández is clever, and the technical quality of players like Giovani Lo Celso can unpick any defence.

Then you have Ange Postecoglou’s Forest. Their approach is nothing if not bold. An aggressive 4-3-3 that transforms into a virtual 2-3-5 when they have the ball. The full-backs tuck inside, the wingers stay high and wide, and Morgan Gibbs-White acts as the creative engine, linking everything together. It’s an exciting, attack-minded system. The downside? It can be vulnerable to quick counter-attacks and teams that exploit the space left behind. This is where Murillo’s recovery speed becomes so crucial—he’s the key to allowing Forest to play a high defensive line without getting consistently exposed.

Players Who Could Decide the Game

In a match like this, individual moments of quality often make the difference.

For Betis, watch Giovani Lo Celso. He’s the brains of the operation, the player who finds pockets of space and delivers the incisive passes that break down stubborn defences.
Pablo Fornals is another danger. His intelligent movement and knack for arriving in the box at the right time could trouble Forest’s midfield.
For Forest, everything flows through Morgan Gibbs-White. He is the team’s chief creator and mood-setter. If he has time and space on the ball, Forest will create chances.
Callum Hudson-Odoi’s direct running and one-on-one ability could be the perfect weapon on the counter-attack against Betis’s advanced full-backs.
Murillo’s potential return is massive. His pace and defensive timing are essential for dealing with Betis’s rotating attacking movements.

How It Might All Play Out

On paper, Real Betis are the favourites. They’re at home (so to speak), more settled in their style, and facing a Forest team still adapting to a new manager’s demands. Pellegrini’s side will likely enjoy more possession and will look to methodically break down Forest’s structure.

But Forest have a wildcard factor. Their system, while risky, is designed to score goals and create chaos. If they can withstand the initial pressure and hit Betis effectively on the break—using the pace of players like Hudson-Odoi—they are more than capable of getting a result. A draw here, a hard-fought point on the road in a difficult first European fixture, would be an excellent outcome for Postecoglou and his team.

It might not be a vintage performance, but it will be a proud one. After 29 years, Nottingham Forest are back in Europe. And that in itself is something to celebrate.

Prediction: Real Betis 1-1 Nottingham Forest
