Vice President appeals to politicians to set aside differences for the sake of peace and progress

Kano State, Nigeria – In a heartfelt appeal aimed at fostering peace and unity, Vice President Kashim Shettima urged politicians in Kano State to rise above their political disagreements and prevent division within the state. His message, delivered on Saturday evening, came during a condolence visit to the Emir’s palace following the passing of the late Galadiman Kano, Abbas Sunusi.

Kano: A Political and Cultural Heartbeat

Addressing a gathering that included Kano State Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf, Kano APC Chairman Abdullahi Abbas, and significant political figures representing different factions within the state, Shettima underscored the importance of unity in a state renowned for its political influence.

“Kano should never be a place where politics divide people,” Shettima asserted. “It is a mistake for a state like Kano, which commands respect throughout Nigeria, to be beset by internal political strife.”

Shettima emphasized Kano’s unique position, calling it “the heartbeat of the North,” a region whose political stability reverberates far beyond its borders. “What affects Kano affects Northern Nigeria as a whole,” he remarked, highlighting the critical role the state plays in the country’s socio-political landscape.

The Vice President’s appeal came at a crucial time, as Kano has seen rising tensions between political groups, notably between the Kwankwasiyya and Gandujiyya factions. His call for harmony was a reminder that despite differing views, the welfare of Kano’s people must remain paramount.

Speaking from the Heart: A Message in Hausa

In a move that resonated deeply with the audience, Shettima chose to deliver his message in Hausa, the local language, though he is not a native speaker. This effort was aimed at making his plea more personal and accessible to the people of Kano.

“That is why I am addressing you in Hausa,” Shettima explained, “to ensure my message is clear and heartfelt.” His sincerity in choosing the local tongue was widely appreciated and added a layer of emotional connection to his words.

During his visit, Shettima also paid tribute to the late Galadiman Kano, offering prayers for the departed leader’s soul. He conveyed his condolences to the Emirate and the wider community affected by the loss of a respected figure in Kano’s traditional leadership.

Beyond Politics: Prayers for Peace Amid Security Challenges

Aside from political unity, Shettima’s visit underscored broader concerns affecting Kano, notably the recent security challenges. He expressed deep sympathy to the victims of bandit attacks in Shanono Local Government Area, where several people were kidnapped and some lost their lives.

“We earnestly pray for peace not just in Kano, but throughout Nigeria,” he said. Shettima’s remarks served as a call for collective effort in confronting insecurity, a challenge that has had profound implications on the people’s daily lives and the state’s overall stability.

The Vice President’s visit to the Emir’s palace and his balanced message of unity, respect for traditional authority, and concern for security difficulties highlight a comprehensive approach to addressing the complexities facing Kano today. By emphasizing harmony over division, Shettima hopes to steer Kano on a path where political rivalry does not translate into social discord or hamper developmental progress.

As the state navigates its political landscape, the Vice President’s plea stands as both a reminder and an inspiration: unity is essential for Kano’s continued influence and prosperity within Nigeria and the wider Northern region.
