In a significant breakthrough in the fight against drug trafficking, Thai authorities have arrested a Nigerian national suspected of being a major player in the cocaine trade on the famous tourist island of Koh Phangan. The arrest took place on the evening of March 1, 2025, near the bustling Pantip Plaza market, a popular spot among tourists. Undercover Operation Unveils Cocaine Network
The arrest of 37-year-old Ugonna J. (last name withheld) came after extensive surveillance and intelligence-gathering efforts by the tourist police. Acting on reports of a foreign national selling narcotics to unsuspecting tourists, investigators launched a covert operation targeting Ugonna, who was believed to be a key supplier of cocaine on the island.
Using the widely popular messaging app WhatsApp, undercover officers posed as potential buyers. They arranged a meeting at the Pantip Plaza market, a strategic location chosen for its high foot traffic and anonymity. Reports suggest that he sold cocaine in one-gram packages for 6,000 baht (USD 175) each, often adding extra charges for deliveries outside his main area of operation.
