In a heart-wrenching incident that has left a community grieving, a young family from Virginia was among the casualties of a tragic plane crash in Washington, D.C., on Wednesday evening. The Livingston family, hailing from Ashburn, was returning home from the 2025 U.S. Figure Skating Championships held in Wichita, Kansas, when their lives were cut short in a collision involving American Airlines Flight 5342 and a U.S. Army Black Hawk helicopter.

A Vibrant Family’s Passion for Figure Skating

The Livingston family—consisting of Peter, Donna, and their two daughters, 11-year-old Alydia and 14-year-old Everly—were well-known in their local community for their love of sports and family involvement. Friends and neighbors described them as a dynamic and loving family, with a passion for figure skating that was evident in their everyday lives.

According to family friend Kim Urban, the girls were promising young talents in the skating world, with Donna actively participating in their lives and Peter being a dedicated hockey player. “They were just a big personality family. Loving, thoughtful, and extraordinarily supportive,” Urban recounted during an emotional interview with CNN. “Peter and Donna would do anything for their kids. Alydia and Everly were bright children, very talented skaters, and had the most bubbly personalities.”

The girls even shared their excitement and dreams on social media leading up to the championships. In their final Instagram post, the sisters beamed as they posed with their badges at the Intrust Bank Arena, writing, “If you look closely at Alydia’s badge… We were born ready for this, but is @usfigureskating ready for this much Livingston at Nationals?” Their infectious enthusiasm for skating resonated with their friends and fans, leaving a bittersweet memory that now evokes heartbreak.

Community Devastated by the Loss

The tragic accident claimed a total of 67 lives, with recovery teams continuing to search the icy waters of the Potomac River in the aftermath of the crash. Among those deceased were at least 28 individuals, including three soldiers from the helicopter. Of the 60 passengers on the American Airlines flight, 14 were figure skaters who had traveled from various parts of the country, including six members of the Skating Club of Boston, accompanied by their parents and coaches.

The news of the Livingston family’s loss has sent shockwaves throughout the tight-knit skating community and beyond. Urban expressed the deep sadness felt by many, noting that her own children shared the ice with Everly and Alydia. “My kids skated with them, and they are heartbroken over this news,” she said, her voice filled with sorrow.

Everly, whose dreams were rooted in athletics, had previously articulated her aspirations to be part of Team USA. In an interview with Fox News in November 2023, she shared her ambitions: “My goals are to actually be a part of Team USA and travel around the world.” Her dreams, like those of many young athletes, were filled with promise and potential, but this tragic event has now put an end to them.

As the community mourns the loss of the Livingstons, they find solace in the loving memories captured on and off the ice. The impact of their lives and the joy they brought to those around them will be remembered for years to come.

The investigation into the collision continues, with officials working to uncover the circumstances surrounding the crash that has forever altered the Livingston family’s legacy. As families reflect on their own loved ones, the tragedy serves as a somber reminder of the unpredictable nature of life and the strength of community in times of grief.
