Political Commentator Questions DeSantis’ Attempt to Appeal to Evangelical Christians

In a recent interview with the Christian Broadcasting Network, Florida Governor Ron DeSantis, who is also a prominent 2024 Republican presidential candidate, made a claim that has drawn criticism from political commentator Mehdi Hasan. Hasan, known for his frank and incisive analysis, called out DeSantis for what he described as a “transparent pitch” to win over evangelical Christian voters.

During the interview, DeSantis expressed his admiration for the original disciples of Jesus Christ and stated that he would have liked to have been among them. However, Hasan couldn’t help but notice what he called the “sheer arrogance” of DeSantis’ statement.

“Just imagine for a second if, alongside Peter, John, James, and co., there had been a Ron,” Hasan quipped. He then proceeded to envision how DeSantis’ views might have clashed with the teachings and actions of Jesus:

“A Ron who, every time Jesus helped the poor and used loaves of bread and fish to feed the hungry, was like, ‘You’re too woke, Jesus. You’re too woke. Let them pull themselves up by their own bootstraps,'” Hasan mocked. “Every time Jesus said, ‘I don’t know, we should embrace refugees and migrants,’ Ron was like, ‘Stop all the wokeness, Jesus. Send them to Martha’s Vineyard. The Holy Land is where woke goes to die.'”

Hasan further argued that the left-wing ideology of Jesus and his disciples would have been at odds with DeSantis’ political stance. He discussed this angle with fellow MSNBC host Ayman Mohyeldin, stating, “The truth is that the Jesus of the gospels and his disciples were way too left-wing for Ronald DeSantis.”

Mohyeldin chimed in, highlighting DeSantis’ previous loyalty to former President Donald Trump and drawing parallels between DeSantis and the biblical figure of Judas, who betrayed Jesus. Even Trump himself seemed to acknowledge this supposed betrayal, as a clip was played of him labeling DeSantis as “disloyal.”

This exchange between Hasan and Mohyeldin raises questions about the strategy DeSantis is adopting in his pursuit of the Republican nomination. While attempting to appeal to conservative Christians, he risks alienating Trump loyalists who may perceive his actions as disloyal.

Hasan’s critique of DeSantis comes at a time when political commentators and journalists are closely monitoring potential presidential candidates.
