5 Things Not to Do Before Trying to Sleep

A good night’s sleep is essential for our overall well-being and health, yet many of us struggle with falling asleep or staying asleep. For some, getting a solid seven or eight hours is a dream in itself. But as we learn more about sleep, and as more companies conduct research into it, we understand that the activities we engage in before bed can greatly impact our sleep quality.

The betting industry has always been one of the most exciting and fast-paced industries in the world. Online casinos have revolutionized the way we gamble and play. But Betway is not just about providing entertainment, it is also about providing valuable insights and research to improve our overall well-being. An experiment conducted by online casino Betway used sleep tracking apps to monitor the sleep quality of individuals after engaging in various activities before bed.

The activities included listening to music, grabbing a late-night snack, scrolling through social media, watching a horror film, watching a comedy film, playing a mobile game, meditating, cleaning your bedroom, watching a true crime show, watching the news, reading a book, speaking with friends and family, doing a face mask, and doing a home workout.

The results of the experiment showed what we should drop in order to get a good night’s sleep.

Stop the Horror Movies

As anticipated, watching a horror movie before bed resulted in the lowest sleep quality among participants, with an average sleep score of just 65%. Despite being able to sleep for an average of seven and a half hours, those who engaged in this activity were awake for approximately 26 minutes during the night. So, ditch the scary films if you want to take the first step towards getting a solid night’s rest.

Turn Off True Crime Documentaries

True crime shows often depict real-life, violent, or disturbing events, which can lead to feelings of anxiety, fear, and stress. These emotions can also make it hard to relax and fall asleep, resulting in lower sleep quality. Participants who engaged in this activity scored an average of 68% in sleep quality and the average duration of sleep after watching true crime shows was six hours and 40 minutes, which is almost an hour less than after watching a horror movie.

Ditch the Late-night Home Workouts

Do you hit the treadmill and then get into bed thinking that because your legs are tired, you will fall asleep instantly? Big mistake. Of all the activities monitored, true crime shows and evening workouts proved to be the most disruptive to sleep. These activities resulted in participants being awake an average of 27 minutes during the night. If you prefer to exercise in the evening, it may be beneficial to switch to a more calming activity, such as light yoga, to ease your body into a state of relaxation before bedtime. Turn Off Your Mobile and Tablet

Using digital technology, such as smartphones, tablets, or laptops, before bed can negatively impact sleep quality. Electronic devices emit a blue light that can suppress the production of melatonin, a hormone that regulates sleep. This can make it harder for the brain to wind down and fall asleep. Using electronic devices before bed can also be stimulating to the brain. It is recommended to avoid using electronic devices for at least an hour before bedtime to help the body relax, fall asleep, and have better quality sleep.
