West Brom have begun talks to sign former Chelsea captain John Terry, Sky sources understand.

Tony Pulis is interested in bringing the ex-England skipper to the Hawthorns, and has joined a battle with local rivals Aston Villa to land the 36-year-old.

Sky sources reported on Monday that Villa were keen on Terry and the Championship club’s manager Steve Bruce held informal talks with Terry over a round of golf over the weekend.

Terry is believed to be open to the idea of moving to Villa Park but he also has options with Premier League sides and is confident he can still perform at the highest level.

Centre-back Terry made an emotional farewell to Chelsea last month after a distinguished 22-year spell at Stamford Bridge, which will officially end at the termination of his contract on June 30.

He was a peripheral figure in terms of playing time during his final campaign with the Blues but has made it clear that he wants to continue his career.

Terry said after the final Premier League game of the season against Sunderland: “Every ex-player says the same – play as long as you can and treasure every minute. I want to play.”
