UNIOSUN: Gov, Adeleke approves dissolution of Institution’s Governing Council

Osogbo, Osun State – In a surprising move, Governor Ademola Adeleke of Osun State has announced the immediate dissolution of the Osun State University, UNIOSUN Governing Council. The announcement was made through a statement signed by Samuel Ayanleye Aina, the Osun State Head of Service, on Thursday, May 19, 2023, and obtained by Wowplus news on Friday.

The decision has been met with mixed reactions, with some applauding the Governor’s bold move, while others are questioning the justification for the dissolution. The statement from the government expressed appreciation for the service and commitment of the members of the dissolved council to the development of the university.

In the statement, the Governor thanked the council members for their contributions to the university, as well as the state of Osun in general. The statement further read, “The Governor of Osun State, Senator Ademola Jackson Nurudeen Adeleke has approved the dissolution of Osun State University Governing Council with immediate effect. The Osun State University Governing Council, which was dissolved by the Governor, was tasked with developing policies and providing general guidance for the university. The Council was also responsible for the appointment of senior staff, including the Vice-Chancellor.

The sudden and unexpected decision to dissolve the council has led to speculation about the Governor’s motivations. Some observers have suggested that the decision may be related to allegations of mismanagement and corruption within the university. Others have speculated that it may be related to a desire by the Governor to exert more direct control over the running of the university.

Despite the lack of clarity about the reasons behind the decision, some stakeholders have welcomed it as a positive development. Some members of the academic community have expressed hope that the dissolution will lead to increased transparency and accountability in the management of the university.

The immediate past Vice-Chancellor of the university, Professor Olu Aina, has also welcomed the decision and praised the Governor for his boldness. Professor Aina said, “This decision shows that the Governor is committed to ensuring that the university operates in the best interests of the people of Osun State. I believe that this will create an opportunity for us to address some of the challenges facing the university and move towards a more sustainable future”.

Meanwhile, members of the dissolved council have expressed shock and disappointment at the Governor’s decision. Some have expressed concern about the impact that the decision will have on the university’s operations and on the morale of staff and students.

Reacting to the development, a source close to the dissolved council stated that the announcement has come as a bolt out of the blue. The source said, “We were not expecting this at all. We had no prior indication that the Governor was planning to dissolve the council. We are shocked and disappointed by this decision”.
