Giannis Antetokounmpo is African Player of the Week

Two-time NBA All-Star and Milwaukee Bucks floor general Giannis Antetokounmpo is undoubtedly one of the top players in the NBA league at the moment and has the stats to back up this claim.

In as far as multi-talented forwards are concerned, the 6’11’’ Nigerian-Greek is right up there with the best of them and has a significant impact on his team’s performance, every time he is on the floor.

In only his fourth season in the league, he has already put up performances that would otherwise be reserved for players with much more experience in the NBA.

With the current season just over the halfway mark, Antetokounmpo is already leading the Bucks in five main statistical categories: Points (28), rebounds (10.3), assists (4.7), and minutes played per game with an average of 37. He is also second in blocks and steals per game.

He is currently shooting 54.4 percent from the field, 30.5 percent from behind the arc, and 76.3 percent from the free throw line.

Antetokounmpo played in all four of Milwaukee’s games over the past seven days and averaged a double-double. His most notable performance was in the Bucks’ 107-95 victory over the Philadelphia 76ers last Tuesday in which he had a 31-point, 18-rebound double-double.

Our first honourable mention this week goes to Houston Rockets center Clint Capela who is playing a major role in the team’s current performance.

He is currently leading his squad in rebounds with an average of 10.8 per game, blocks with 1.8 per game, and is also occupying the top spot at the Rockets in field goal percentage with 65.6. The 6’10’’ Congolese/Angolan-Swiss big man is also shooting 60.4 percent from the charity stripe.

Capela appeared in all three of the Rockets’ games over the past week and also averaged a double-double, with his standout performance coming in Houston’s 102-91 win over fellow Texan outfit the Sacramento Spurs last Friday in which he put up a 14-point, 14-rebound double-double.

The second honourable mention goes to the x-factor at the Indiana Pacers, Nigerian-American Victor Oladipo, who is getting ready to make his debut All-Star appearance later this month.

He is leading Indiana in points (24), steals (1.9) and minutes per game with an average of 34.4 per session. Oladipo is also second in assists and blocks per game. His other numbers include shooting 48.7 percent from the field, 39 percent from three-point range and 80.7 percent from the free throw line.

The past week saw him play in all four of the Pacers’ games and his points were in double digits. Oladipo’s top performance was in 133-126 victory over the Charlotte Hornets on Saturday in which he had 35 points and five rebounds.
