In a significant development for residents of Anambra State, the state government has announced that it will cover the hospital bills of Mr. Okechukwu Akeneme, a victim of alleged brutality by agents of the state. This decision comes after a series of events that have drawn public outrage and calls for justice.
Mr. Akeneme, a respected figure in the community known for his roles as a former chairman of the Onitsha Federated Chapel of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) and as the Chairman of the Onitsha Chamber of Commerce, recently endured a traumatic experience that left him with severe injuries. Reports indicate that during a heated argument over the payment of a waste disposal levy, employees of the Anambra State Waste Management Agency (ASWAMA) physically assaulted him, resulting in a broken neck and spinal cord.
Initially, when Mr. Akeneme expressed that he was unwell, the agents dismissed his concerns, suggesting that he was merely pretending. Unfortunately, this dismissal turned tragic as his health quickly deteriorated. Initially treated at a local hospital in Onitsha, he was later transferred to Nnamdi Azikiwe University Teaching Hospital (NAUTH) before being sent to Memphis Hospital in Enugu for more specialized care.

As of now, Mr. Akeneme’s medical expenses have soared to approximately N20 million, a staggering figure that highlighted the grave impact of the incident on his life and well-being. This situation has sparked public outcry, with many residents and community leaders demanding that the state government take action.
On Tuesday, during a State Executive Council meeting, Governor Chukwuma Soludo and his team discussed the findings of a fact-finding mission sent to visit Mr. Akeneme. They concluded that the government would take responsibility for his medical expenses. This decision reflects a commitment to justice and reparation for the wrongs inflicted upon citizens.
Dr. Law Mefor, the Commissioner for Information, released a statement detailing the government’s resolution. He expressed sympathy for Mr. Akeneme’s family and conveyed hopes for his swift recovery. “The 37th Anambra State Executive Council (ANSEC) Meeting received the report of the fact-finding team sent to the victim of brutality by some contractors of ASWAMA, Mr. Okechukwu Akaneme, who is hospitalized in Enugu. In response to the report, the Council resolved to pick up the medical expenses of Mr. Akeneme while sympathizing with his family and praying for his quick recovery,” Dr. Mefor stated.
The incident has sparked a wider conversation about the conduct of state officials and the importance of accountability in public service. It raises questions about how citizens are treated by their own government agents, especially when it comes to disputes that can escalate into violence. The Anambra community has rallied around Mr. Akeneme, expressing solidarity and concern over the treatment he received. Social media platforms and local forums have been flooded with messages of support, urging the government to ensure such acts of violence are addressed firmly and justly.
Furthermore, many in the local community have described Mr. Akeneme as a dedicated public servant who has contributed positively to civil society. His brutalization has not only affected him but has also left a mark on the community that is rallying for change and justice. This incident emphasizes the need for the government to ensure that all its agents, whether in waste management or any other sector, are held to high standards of behavior.

As the state government takes steps to address Mr. Akeneme’s medical costs, many are watching closely. Will this act of goodwill pave the way for reforms in how state agencies operate? Will there be more robust mechanisms to prevent such violence in the future?
The broader implications of this incident echo deeply throughout Anambra, calling for a collective reflection on the values of respect, accountability, and justice that should underpin all public service efforts.
