Acting Governor of Afghan Province Killed in Suicide Bombing

0

On Tuesday morning, June 6, the acting governor of Afghanistan’s northern Badakhshan province, Nisar Ahmad Ahmadi, was killed in a suicide bombing. The attack occurred in the provincial capital, Faizabad, when a suicide bomber drove a car filled with explosives into the vehicle carrying Ahmadi. The driver was also killed, and six others were wounded in the attack.

Ahmadi had been the deputy governor of the province before stepping up as acting governor last month. The attack has not yet been claimed by any group, but the Islamic State (IS) has been responsible for similar attacks in the region. The head of the province’s police force was killed in a suicide blast claimed by IS in December last year, and the head of the mining department was killed in a bomb attack in April last year.

IS remains a threat in Afghanistan, despite the Taliban’s return to power in August 2021. While the Taliban’s aim is to rule an independent Afghanistan, IS is fighting to establish a global caliphate. The group has killed and wounded hundreds of people in attacks since the Taliban government returned to power, with some targeting foreigners in a bid to undermine the Taliban government.

Security in Afghanistan has improved since the Taliban’s return to power, but suicide bombings and other attacks have become expected in the country. The attack on Ahmadi is a reminder of the ongoing threat of terrorism in the region.

The acting governor’s death is a blow to the province of Badakhshan, which has already suffered from the loss of its police chief in the December 2021 attack. The region will now have to find a new leader to continue the work of governing in the midst of ongoing conflict and instability.

The attack on Ahmadi is a tragic reminder of the toll that terrorism takes on innocent civilians and government officials in Afghanistan. As the country continues to rebuild and recover from years of conflict, it will need to remain vigilant against the ongoing threat of terrorism in the region.
